They called me from a 800, when called back, it was the IRS, but the number they left me was this 202-470-2578 a scam, saying US Treasury

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). Someone who introduced themselves as US Treasury called saying on my voicemail that I am in legal trouble and better call them or have my attorney get with them, and law enforcement is after me. Scam.

Got a call from this number ,a Mr. Cooper with a heavy Asian Indian accent left a message that her was with the IRS and I owed back taxes...what a scam.  Reported this to the local police and the IRS.

Got a call from 800-829-1040 saying to call back 202-470-2578 stating he was with US Dept of Treasury and that legal action has been taken against me.  Typical scam.

I get a call from. Mr cooper he said i had back taxs to pay this is the number 2024702578 it a scam

"Alex Cooper" called my mom and told her she had to pay $1218 for an IRS debt by the next morning. Luckily she called me and didn't end up paying.
I called the number and someone answered US Treasury. I asked for Alex Cooper. A man asked for my name and I said "I'm not telling you, I just want to speak with Alex Cooper." Then he said, if you don't give me your name, I'll have to hang up on you.

Same here. Jason Brown with a middle eastern accent?? Hardly. Said he was with dept of legal affairs-us dept of treasury. And I am being cited? And to have my recent lawyer call back at 202-470-2578. The call was from 319-505-9106 Iowa, but the message said to return call to the 202 number. Sad sad.

Poorly prerecorded message from someone claiming to represent the IRS, saying I had fraudulently filed taxes and I need to call them right away to avoid prosecution and jail time.

Blocked the number. SCAM.

Got one of these just now, obvious fake, thick indian accent pretending to be the IRS about fraudulent taxes. the IRS won't call you about this stuff, you would get an official letter in the mail. 202-470-2578 was the number called from and the voicemail said to return the call there.

I just received a call from this number saying that I had fraudulent taxes, that there is a warrant out for my arrest and that the sheriff would be arriving in 45 minutes to arrest me.  Scared me to death. Thank God I googled the phone number.  This guy, "Officer Steve Anderson" also had a thick Indian accent.

I have gotten three calls from this number in the past 2 days. The first two times it went to voicemail and was a prerecorded message saying there was fraudulent activity in my taxes this year and that I was to call the 202 number back immediately or I would be in serious legal trouble. The funny thing here is this year is the first year I used a non-tax accountant service (TurboTax) to file my taxes and find it weird that this is happening. Maybe these scammers are getting our information through using these services. Its scary because it does seem like a pretty official call, only for i've always heard that the IRS would never call, they would send a letter, I would be believing this!!!!! I am just going to block the number. I will be thinking twice about using a service like TurboTax in the future too.

Received 3 calls so far, and a TEXT MESSAGE from the "IRS" the text reads, "IRS NOTICE: For more information contact on +1-2024702578 otherwise we will proceed further with legal steps and will forward your arrest warrant to your local police department."
First couple calls was a pre-recorded voice (American accent) saying it was a police officer, that I needed to call the IRS because of fraudulentertainment activity and what not. When I attempted to call back to 2578 it rang several times and never went to any answering service.
I'm sure if I do answer and actually get to speak with someone, I'll be ordered to send them funds by giving them the number to a Target gift card lol

Surely IRS Scam, remember IRS do not make calls

Called on April 5th and 6th I didn't answer
Automated message that was cut off at the very beginning of the message claiming misconduct on my tax return that I am hiding from the government. I blocked the number and reported it to the IRS. Total scam, my taxes are filed correctly every year by my account.

Check this out they left message was suppose to call back I was busy . Lied told them I would get a gift card lol . So they called didn't answer . Then my local police department called saw to missed calls . Call the number back they said they didn't call. There was one person there he said it want me now they can link into police call you with police number to scare you.

They can't "link into police call", but they can spoof the phone number of your local PD.

I've been hammered by robo calls from 202-470-2578 for the last several days. I never pick up unknown #'s but these d*cks leave voicemails. These pathetic losers state that they have found "fraud and misconduct on my return" and to call them immediately (LOL). Today they sent me a text from 202 601-5414 threatening me with arrest if I didn't call 202 470-2578. I see that this # is still in use even though it was first reported on here in 2014. Why hasn't it been shut down? I forwarded all the info to the IRS (phone & txt #'s and messages).

SCAM! An electronic voice message stating the following "...misconduct on your tax which you are hiding from the federal government. This needs to be rectified immediately so do return the call as soon as you receive the message. The number is 202-470-2578 I repeat again 202-470-2578. Thank you."...SCAM
