Received a call from this number Nov. 14 2008 at 7:05 PM. Caller was attempting to sell me a subscription to my local Newspaper, the Albany Democrat-Herald (in Albany, Oregon) The call however, was from WASHINGTON DC.

Our local Paper DOES NOT I REPEAT DOES NOT cold call people for subscriptions. I know this as a first hand FACT.

THIS IS A SCAM CALL ATTEMPTING TO GET BANK AND/OR OTHER FINANCIAL INFO.

These groups apparently seem to be researching their target communities with GREAT DETAIL so as to fool the people they call into thinking it is legitimate. IT IS NOT.

Someone from this number has started calling me two to three times a day which started three weeks ago. They don't leave a message. Sometimes, I will lift the receiver and drop the receiver in the cradle to disconnect them They don't call back until the next day.

This number called us in Corvallis, OR. I never answer calls I don't know and they didn't leave a message. The caller ID said Washington, D.C. I noticed all the above posts seem to be local in the Willamette Valley and very recent, just this past week. Is this a new scammer?

Exactly as others have said, the ID says Washington DC, I'm in Albany, OR. The guy identified himself as being with the Albany Democrat Herald and wanted to sign us up for the Sunday paper. I said no, he said thanks, that was it.

They call 2-3 times per day.

They have started calling me, I never answer.  I live in Dallas, TX.  What the heck is going on?  maybe snopes has an answer.

Fake.  At least you can have a normal education.  I think they should give me a scholarship for putting up with their weirdness.

I am in Salt Lake City, Utah. I get a call from this number 2-3 times a day. It's been happening for at least two weeks. They never leave a message and tonight I picked the phone up but didn't say anything. The voice on the phone said my name and asked if I was there. I don't know who this person is and why they know my name. If it's that important they would leave me a message.

Albany, Oregon.  Got the call from these guys the day before Thanksgiving selling a Democrat Herald subscription.  They ask for a credit card number and when I told them the local office would have to make the contact, they said OK and that we would hear from them in 3-5 days, which of course, they didn't.  The guy was good......but the Washington DC caller ID was a giveaway.

It's not just Oregon anymore.  I'm in Buffalo, NY and just received the phone calls once-a-day over the last three days.  I never answer the cell phone when unfamiliar numbers call.  They never leave a message and eventually stop trying.  I don't know what the scam would have been and only assume it would have been something similar to those already outlined above.

Also from Buffalo, and have recieved the call now three times in two days. I don't answer numbers that I do not know either, but instead came on here to search it! Glad I did!

I believe you are right that Buffalo is the focus.  I was away this week, came home to 5 missed calls from this number, not a single message.  There were also 4 from 888-276-2971.  Same people???

I Live near Buffalo and have been getting calls from this number several times a day for at least a week and a half now.  Figuring that it was a telemarketer I never picked up the calls.  How can I get them to stop!
