Got a phone call this morning saying that the IRS is filing a claim against us.  No name, just call this number 202-618-1948. I didn't call, just checked here to see if it is a scam.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
    Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:

    1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

    2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances - amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

    3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://m.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-centr ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). Received a message that they have been trying to contact us and the IRS is filing a legal claim against us for unpaid
taxes.  We have no unpaid taxes and if we did, the IRS would contact us first by US mail. They left a call back number

Caller claiming to be from the IRS says they are beginning legal proceedings against me and to return their call.  I reported this to the Justice Dept, since this involves both scamming and impersonating a federal agent.

Received a robo call that sounded like computer generated message from (202)618-1948 claiming its the IRS filing a lawsuit. This message was left on my machine.  The message didn't leave the name of the person that they are filing a claim against.

So, I called the next day, it sounded like a call center with phones going off in the back ground.  I talked to an Indian or Pakistani guy, I asked who was this he said the IRSSS.  Then I asked for his name he said Frank (obvious Lie).  When I called the IRS in the past they would give me there employee number, which he didn't.   I told him I received a call from them and what its about.  He asked me for my phone number.  Odd that he didn't ask me for my social security number but instead phone number.  I told him that I will call back and he hung up the phone right away ..

I received the same automated message that others have reported, stating that the IRS was pursuing legal action against me. Clearly a scam. The call appeared to come from Chicago:  312-263-8166.

Received a phone call from (718) 783-8996 with an automated message informing me that IRS (Internal Revenue Services) was filing a lawsuit against me and to call back at (202) 618-1948. Besides the automated voice, the caller identifying themselves as Internal Revenue 'Services' (IRS never ID's themselves as 'Services') is what tipped me off. Filed a complaint using IRS web link above, and will warn others not to fall for this obvious scam.

    They can go to hell

Those guys trying to reach me through my sister's cell phone today. They left a message and sent a text, see below. I called them, a man with a strong Indian/Pakistan accent identify himself as IRS agent in Washington DC. But he did not provide his name and I demanded him to identify himself. He hang up and I called back twice and nobody answered.

I like Mooncut initiative and I did the same.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

Unfortunately these people are located in India or Pakistan and beyond the reach of US law.  Call blocker is your best bet.
