I received a phone call from someone saying they are canada revenue agency.  I had just paid my company's GST, and the phoned to verify the GST payment.  They got my SIN number and address.  After I hung up it hit me that the CRA would never call someone directly for their information, so I believe this is a phishing scam to collect information.  Beware.

I just received this call also. Very unprofessional so it is easy to tell its a scam. Only asked for the person by first name and wanted the cell number to contact the person. If it was the CRA for GST I know they have the number.

How can they get my information? Should i report this to the police?

If you call the number back there is a recording so I believe the authorities especially the CRA could very easily trace the source of the call and if it is a scam terminate the number

Got a call saying they are from CRA. First of all CRA does not call anyone and then ask for their SIN # and information..They already have it on file.. They will always contact you by official mail unless you requested a call back..

Still active. They leave an 866 number on the message to call back. CRA doesn't phone people out of the blue. They will send you a letter if they want to talk.

I just got a call from the same number saying they are CRA,  and I gave out my full name, DOB, and address to them. So what should I do?

I just wanted to set some people's mind at ease. Yesterday (4th August 2016) I received a call from a lady who stated she was from the CRA and was calling to verify some information in regards to a business that I have that was recently registered for GST. She asked me to verify my DOB, full address for the business and if I was the director of the business. I gave her this information. She did not ask for any pertinent information like my Canadian SIN number or passport number, etc. Last night, I got to thinking about this phone call and I was worried that I had inadvertently given over information that could cause identity theft.

This morning I rang the number the phone number back (204 984 7600), the same lady responded and I explained why I was calling, I got her full name and she let me know why the local Winnipeg, MB phone number for the GERR (GST Registration Section for the CRA) shows up instead of the toll-free number, it was her direct line. She suggested if I was still concerned to call the actual toll-free business number for the CRA which is 1800 959 5525 explain the situation to the representative and they can look at your file to see if someone from the GERR (GST) has rung to verify information. In my case, they were able to confirm she had rung yesterday so good news.

The big advice the CRA agent gave me is if you receive a hacker / spam phonecall pretending to be from the CRA, the information they will want will be more likely the details you shouldn't be giving out over the phone unless you call them and they will be quite aggressive and suggest you may need to pay them or else! He did qualify that by saying staff calling from the GERR won't necessarily have an Agent Number (which you should record down). If you receive a similar phone call like I did, it was easy enough for me to confirm it was legit by ringing the actual CRA business number 1800 959 5525.
