Called and said they were from the US Government and that they were going to give me 5 thousand dollars.  Asked for all of my information.  When refused to give it to them, told me to "[***]".

Got a call from this # on Saturday from a "Matt Willis" with a very thick Indian accent. Told me the government wants to give me a free $5K grant that I never have to repay.  Riiiiight - which I would not accept anyway, by the way, because I'm not a socialist.  I said "No thanks" knowing it was a scam.  Today I get another call, same #, from "Nick Johnson" with a MUCH heavier accent, who did not understand anything I said to him.  Can someone shut these turds down?  Who falls for this crap!?

FAR TOO MANY FALL FOR IT -
Because they will not take the time to check things out first.  They assume its legitimate and then hit the complaint boards after the ripoff.

The internet is the TOOL you use to avoid ripoffs.  but too many think of the internet is a toy - only for shopping and networking.

    Government Grant Scams
The "free money" scam has been around almost as long as the human species.
It has more variations than a bulldog has wrinkles but you can count on one thing: the government (any government) does not simply give money away to individuals. Anyone who tells you differently has larceny in his heart.
If you give him your bank account number, he will soon have your funds in his pocket.
It does no good to list all of the names used by these bunko artists because a.) they change all the time and b.) every single free-money government-grant offer is a scam. Period.

Wife answered the phone, and after hearing about a $5K US Govt. grant, she asked him to take her off their calling list, and hung up. The guy called back immediately and made vulgar sexual comments. Wife said nothing and hung up. He called right back and I answered. He asked where "she" was. I noticed an unusual Mid. Eastern or Hispanic accent, which seemed exaggerated and/or caller may be mentally challenged. When I asked him what he wanted with my wife, he used extremely graphic terms to answer my question. I hung up and he called back almost ten times during the next 5 min.

I got a call about 8:45 EST tonight.  He asked me for my bank information and I told him I'm not giving it to you.  He laughed at me and asked why.  I say "well if you work for the federal government, which you so adamantly claim, you can find it very easily."  He then told me that he was outside my house looking at my windows.  Right then and there I knew it was BS.  My husband got on the phone, told them he was in the US Military and therefore works for the government, asked for a the guy's superior and then he promptly hung up.  I'm waiting for the police as I type.

I JUST RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM THE SAME NUMBER, AND I AM AT WORK!  SAME STORY, WHICH DOESNT SOUND LEGIT AT ALL AND I HUNG UP ON HIM.  IF THE GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO GIVE U SOME MONEY, YOU WILL GET A CHECK IN THE MAIL....NOT A PHONE CALL ASKING FOR BANKING INFO.

Same story here - Indian man asking to confirm my information and birthdate to send a government grant.  He did say he was looking in my windows and described my house.  Luckily I had  moved from there two years ago.  Ha!

Oddly enough I was on the computer at work when this number came up on my CELL PHONE!  I had recently applied for quite a few jobs out of state, and almost answered it. I typed the number into the google search bar, and promptly read the first comment...I pushed my "ignore" button before the second ring!  Thank you to everyone on this message board!

The same ppl called me AGAIN.  This time it was a woman and the caller ID only had a 4 digit number:  1014.  She gave me the same story about the government grant program, to which I replied "no [***] you're not from the government.  You're part of a huge scam.  Don't effing call me again!!"  She called back 10 minutes later with the same 4 digit code on my caller id.  I answered, and blew my rape whistle into the phone.  They didn't call back.  :)

Got a phone call while I was in the grocery store. I don't answer calls from unknown numbers so I ignored it. Less than 30 seconds later they called back again. I was in the middle of a phone call so I ignored it. Judging from these I'm glad I didn't answer. How do they get cell phone numbers?!

I got this phone call as well. He went on telling me about all of this and I figured what the hell, I'll listen even though I knew it had to be a scam. He verified my info (which scares the hell out of me that they know) he asked for my birthday and I told him that the gov't should know that but I verified that also, but when he asked for my last 4 numbers of my social, that was when I was done. I told him that I wasn't comfortable with it and he told me that since it all was being recorded that they had to prove it was me and that was also the reason for my b-day vrification. My mom was with me and told me that I should ask for a number, that if this was legit that they would allow me to call back and to finish. I faked an emergency and he kept trying to get me to finish and told me that no one had time to call me back but he gladly gave me his number which is 253-785-0194. He had a think Indian accent and He got snappy when I asked why he needed this info and what not. I told him that I would call him back tommarow, but I'm not going to at all. I plan on blocking that number if it calls again.

I just got a call from this number from "John Harris" with a thick Indian accent.  It's Labor Day and they called at 8:15PM to tell me they were calling from the US Government to let me know that I was chosen to receive a grant. I asked how they got my info and what branch of the government and he said, "Ma'am, its the US GOVERNMENT!" I told them I would report them if they called again. Don't fall for it!!! It's a total scam.  We all know the government is closed on Labor Day and wouldn't be calling late at night.
