I just got a call from them, scared me to death ... said they were sending a sheriff over within the next three hours to arrest me and I would be in jail for 30 days!  Luckily my son was here and he looked up the number and there are several websites calling this a scam, interesting all within the past week.

IRS notices are sent by certified mail. Tax scammers prey on victims because the IRS has a reputation and because most folks don’t know the tax collection procedures. Genuine tax collectors always start with the US mail.  You get a letter, a notice, or a demand from the IRS. Almost without exception, you get many of these written efforts to get in touch with you, or to get a payment before they resort to coercive collection efforts. Except in cases of fraud, we don’t arrest people for not paying taxes. And in my experience, you can’t get the IRS to use email, even when it would facilitate the matter at hand. So, calls out of the blue from the IRS are assuredly fake.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.   Block and ignore.   DO NOT RETURN THE CALL!

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

I got the exact same scripted call as K T above from a man with a thick indian accent, and it definitely scared me as well. They will tell you that they are with the IRS and give you some fake badge and case number. Then describe how you had an error in your previous years tax return and you ignored multiple notifications by mail to pay. As a result of your failure to pay, they are issuing a warrant for your arrest for evading taxes and will have a sheriff come to your house within the next 3 hours to serve your 30 day initial sentence. Then they pretend to talk to the DA who decides to "cut you a deal" as long as you stay on the line with them the entire time while you go get a cashiers check to pay them.... not sketchy at all. Luckily that tipped me off as I haven't had any experience dealing with the IRS before and didn't know they weren't allowed to cold call you like that. I reported the number to the local police station; hopefully they stop giving people heart attacks like that!!

Had a call this morning from "Unknown".  Some female left a message saying she was "Officer Judy Smith" of the IRS and if I didn't want to be arrested, I should call 213-984-1822 immediately.  Fortunately (or not!) I have had prior dealings with the IRS which were conducted in a very civilized and professional manner - not fun, but not at all scary.   This is one of the more despicable scams as it could potentially cause great anxiety, especially in the older population.  I really wish someone in authority would go after these people and put a stop to their fraudulent practices.  Needless to say, I won't be calling the number she gave.  I just feel so sorry for her next victims.  Thank goodness for websites like this one.
