    Same "order 40" scam as 802-265-1492. Recorded message for "Michael Barnett"– someone I don't know. Threat to track "you" down at place of work or home.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    Two calls so far.  Says a garbled name (that isn't me) and says I have "Two charges pending" .  Gives a "case number" in electronic voice and asks that I call 401-495-7201.  If you Google that number, you'll find many more scam stories.

    Calls saying I have two pending charges and a case number.  Called back and they ask for case number. I tell her I don't have it. She asks for my phone number.  I give it. She goes on to ask if this is my name. I say Nope hasn't been for 7 years.  She gives the last 4 digits of my SS # says I owe for a loan I took out in 2009 with CashNet. Pretty sure I wouldn't have forgotten that!  I said nope. She says well I have your SS# and you owe the $250 plus if this goes to court there will be legal fees etc so it can be take of right now.  I say give me the number to the account. She says there isn't a phone number. I say I don't want a phone number I want the number associated with the loan. She goes on about it not being her problem I have issues with my ex and that I could get this paid off and not get the extra fees when it goes to court.  I tell her I didn't take out a loan and doubt my ex did either. She just talks all on top of me and I finally tell her to just stop talking and listen and so she says "terminating call". Whatever!  Must be pretty [***] to have to take a job with a crappy company that just scams people. Karma is a [***]

    Several calls a day. "two charges" etc. Never use my name or that company they are with. If they really knew anything then they wouldn't be threatening to contact my employer since I am retired. If they come to my place of residence they have a real problem!

    Received a voicemail msg for someone unknown to me. Call came from 302-500-4208, but they left 401-495-7021 to call back, as well as a "Reference #CNB1958". The voicemail message ended with the statement that they would be coming to my home or job (although the message was NOT for anyone known to me), and the words, "You have officially been notified!".

    I'm retired for almost 6 years . They threatened to come to my work due to 2 pending charges. Left a vm telling me that if I didn't contact them or the lender I was going to jail and nothing could be done. No name of person or company. Left a 401 number to call back. Another scam

    I have been receiving these calls, from 302-500-4208, as well as various other numbers, for a person unknown to me, for several years now. The thing that strikes me about YOUR post is the fact that YOU gave the "reference number" - which is the EXACT SAME NUMBER that has been left in all of the messages I have received!
