I am having the same problem all of my callers are routed to (305) 848-8288 it is hurting my business because my customers are not able to call me directly at my magicjack number. This is wrong dead wrong and is not stipulated in any documentation from Magicjack.

I'm in 717 area code w/Vonage.  Trying to call my brother's 717-889-XXXX MagicJack #.  EVERY time I am referred to this stupid phone number because they claim my phone carrier has the call routed as a local call & it's really long distance, according to THEM.  BS!  His number IS local.  Why is it I can call the wrong number, starting w/the same prefix & get thru, but I can't call my brother??

Blame the victim. Rhonda is an intelligent person, and should be treated as such. Mug someone and then say why do you scream; can you be more polite to the mugger please? Thanks Rhonda. My MJ is coming up for renewal and I will not renew but complain to the FCC.  Thank you Rhonda!

As of 15:30 on 4 Jun 2011, this problem persists all as discribed above to include virtually identical transcript of conversations to correct the matter with magic jack.  I have reported this to FCC and BBB and am planning to contact the local (St. Petersburg/Tampa) TV Problem Solving Unit.

I'm really thankful for this website and examiner.com that explained about the whole MJ issue. I keep trying to call my son's T-Ball coach to find out when it starts and keep getting this error. The last two days, I just got a message that the number was out of service. I tried again this morning and received the "Listen to this entire message..." message. So my question is, what kind of third-party charges will they try to bring against my cell phone (Verizon, if anyone cares) if I call the 305 number to have my call routed to the correct number. I went to their Live Chat, and I'll admit I got a bit bitchy. Here's the transcript:

Please wait for a site operator to respond.

Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK436027060799X

Ivana: Hello, how may I help you?

Julia: I received a very important call. I called back and was informed that I had to call a 305 number to have it routed to the correct number. What I want to know is what you plan on charging my phone in order to call one of your numbers.

Ivana: May I have your magic jack phone number please?

Julia: I don't have a magic jack phone. I tried calling a magic jack phone and can't get in touch with the person who has it unless I call this 305 number first. A number registered to Magic Jack. So what will I be billed to call this routing number?

Ivana: If your magicJack phone number is in the same area code as your friends and family, they are not charged long distance to call your magicJack phone number*. If they are in a different area code, they are subject to the rates their phone company would charge for calling the area code your magicJack is registered with.

Julia: What is the asterisk (*) for? Obviously there are qualifications to this statement. What are they? And again, I do not have a Magic Jack. What does it cost to have your company reroute through the 305 number you keep giving out? And have been since 12 November 2010?

Ivana: Please remember that some calls are not considered local calls, even though they are in the same area code. Please refer to your local carrier for more information on local and long distance calls.

Julia: I understand that. I'm not asking about local/long distance charges via my carrier. I'm asking what charges your company will try to bill to my cell phone to call that 305 number in order to contact one of your clients.

Ivana: As I have confirmed here, If you are  (non-magicJack user) needs to have the same area code and prefix number with you so that they will not incur any long-distance charges.

Julia: Look. I don't get long distances charges on my cell phone. So I won't be charged extra to call that number from my cell phone carrier. What I'm asking is WILL MAGICJACK/YMAX CORP TRY TO ADD FURTHER CHARGES TO MY CELL PHONE AS THIRD PARTY CHARGES? I can't get clearer than that, and I do expect an answer to my question, please.

    Ivana: One moment please...

Ivana: Please contact your phone carrier service

Julia: So you'll be charging third party charges then? Great! I'll let the MagicJack user know so that they can get rid of it.

Ivana: We are not charging  third party charges

Ivana: Please contact your phone carrier service

Julia: I did. They don't know why only your phones won't accept incoming long distance calls, either. If I get a third party billing for calling this routing number, then I will take legal action as you have just unequivocally stated that I will not get charged. Thank you for that. I have a copy of this transcript. Thank you and have a great day! Goodbye.
    --
So I called the routing number. It said something like Thank you for calling Magic Jack! Please enter the Magic Jack number you are trying to call.
I find this to be an unnecessary and hassling step for me. When I get a reply to my message from this person, I will be inquiring about a cell phone or something I can call instead.

I recently have the same problem. Can't talk to the customer service either to get this resolved.
We should not have to get people calling us to call some other number(305-848-8288) to reach us.
    Is there a fix yet?

Having this same problem with third MJ, the Plus version. The first ones weren't Plus version. Seems the problem stems from having more than one area code on a single account. For some reason the first area code on an account becomes the one recognized as "local" even if you have two phone numbers on MJ and two different area codes. This creates a confusion on what is a local call and what is a long distance call for some reason. The third MJ we used had it's own account for different area code. No problem. Solution? Set up a separate account for each MJ number instead of putting two MJ's on the same account. This requires using a different email address for each account. DO NOT PUT TWO MJ'S ON THE SAME ACCOUNT UNLESS THEY WILL BE LISTED IN THE SAME AREA CODE FOREVER. This goes aces and spades when using the MJ Plus device!  What to do if you have already put two MJ's on the same account, each with different area code? I'm still working on getting that changed......

My MJ Hell. What I've learned from this is to make sure each and
every MJ device is on it's own separate account. I've not had
problems with mine, my father's, nor my daughter's MJ which I gave
them, all on separate accounts. Soon as I put two MJ's on the same
account is when problems began. The problem device is the PLUS.
Far as I can figure is the area code
you sign up the first MJ device on your account becomes your "home" area
code and then any other area codes are all considered long distance,
even when later used in their own area code region. Magic Jack needs to
have a way devices can be transferred from one account to another or
get this "305" hell fixed since it's related to whatever THEY are
doing wrong.  Here's my conversation with them.

Irish: Hello, how may I help you?

Me: I just got a MJ plus, already have account for older MJ. I added

the MJ Plus to my account and got number for it. The first MJ I got

has a 727 area code, the new MJ Plus has a 410 area code. Now any

call from another 410 area code to the new MJ Plus number gets a

message about calling a 305 area code number instead of ringing on

    through.

Irish: Let me assist you with that.

Irish: Kindly verify your number, 410-888-****.

Me: Yes. I have a request to have my old phone number of 410-***-****

    ported to my account too.

Irish: Thank you for the added information. May I have the complete

message the caller gets when they call the number for the magicJack

    Plus?

Me: It can be read at this website.

    https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-305-848-8288

Me: If you wait a minute I can copy and paste.

    Irish: Please do. Thank you.

    Irish: Take your time.

Me: "Please listen to this entire message. Your phone carrier has

routed this call improperly. This call is being identified as a local

call, and it should be identified as a long distance call. To

complete this call, please call your carrier's customer service

number. Or dial 305-848-8288, wait for a dial tone, and enter the

number you are trying to reach."

Irish: Is that the callers got when they call your number? May I know

    what is their carrier?

Me: I have a third MJ that I sent to my father in the 727 area code

and both he and I have used the two with that area code with no

problems, with no problem being in Maryland or in Florida.

Me: I got that message trying to reach it from a Verizon landline to

    test it.

Me: The first two MJ's I bought I put under separate accounts. Will

putting the new MJ under a third separate account solve the problem?

Irish: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.

Me: I dialed the MJ Plus with the 410 area code from within the 410

area code by using a Verizon landline phone.

Irish: you are getting a message stating "Your number is being

identified as a local number when it is a long distance number", you

need to call your long distance carrier and tell them to route your

    call properly.

Me: I don't know how to do that. I'm in the area code that the

magicjack phone number is registered to. It is NOT a long distance

    call.

    Irish: One moment please...

Irish: I am transferring you to one of our top 10% agents as rated by

our customers. Please hold while I transfer you.

You are now chatting with 'Rodney'

Rodney: Hello. My name is Rodney. To better assist you, let me put

you on hold while I read your previous chat. Thank you.

    Me: OK

    Rodney: One moment please...

Rodney: Thank you for waiting Me.

    Me: OK

Rodney: In order for the callers to call your magicJack plus phone

number they need to dial the access code then your phone number.

Me: I want them to just call the 410 number direct, the same way they

can the 727 area code number. I live in the 410 area code anyway. Can

I set up a separate account for the new MJ PLUS? If I had done that I

don't think this problem would exist.

Me: I'm trying to move over to using a MJ PLUS to replace my Verizon

service, eventually with my ported number once that occurs.

Rodney: If callers are getting a message stating "Your number is

being identified as a local number when it is a long distance

number", they need to call their long distance carrier and tell them

    to route their call properly.

Me: exactly how does that work?

Rodney: They need to call their carrier and inform them that they are

routing the calls improperly.  In that way they will be able to call

    your magicJack plus number normally.

Me: I didn't have this problem with the older model MJ with the 727

area code, even when used both in 727 and the 410 area code.

Me: How can I remove the new MJ Plus from my current account and set

up a completely separate account for it? I believe that will solve

    the problem.

Rodney: My apologies but that is not possible for you can only

register the device once and basically, having both subscriptions

under one account is not the problem.

Me: Why is this not possible? I can supply another email address to

    do so.

Rodney: You can only register the magicJack once and it's non

    transferable.

Me: I've spent almost $80 for a device including S&H for a device

that will not work properly for me. Will it then be necessary for me

to send the device back for the 30 day refund and then order another

    instead to replace it?

Rodney: Yes, you can if that's what you want.

Rodney: Please click the link below

    Rodney: http://my.magicjack.com/returns.html

    Me: OK

Rodney: Process the RMA in there before returning the device.

    Me: OK

Me: I bought this at Radio Shack. Do the RMA direct to MJ?

Rodney: Please do refer to Radio Shack about the refund as we only

give technical support for magicJacks that were ordered through our

distributors and resellers since they have their own policy regarding

    this matter.

Rodney: No need to process the RMA.

Me: Is Radio Shack one of your resellers? Would that qualify for RMA

    direct to MJ?

Rodney: Yes, they are.  RMA is only applicable if the device was

    purchased directly from us.

    Me: OK, bye.

Rodney: Thank you for your time and patience. It is much appreciated.

Part three. In spite of what's claimed in this latest tech call, I'd still urge a separate account for each MJ device you purchase and register. If you ever want to give one away, you will especially appreciate having it on a separate account since you can't transfer it off to another account once it's registered. Here's the continuing saga. I will post my results once my old phone number has completed being ported to MJ. The skinny on it is their claim the "temporary" number given isn't expected to provide full service, only the one being ported will, and the use of the "temporary" number will be removed.

Meg: I'm sorry to hear that.

    Meg: Let me assist you.

Meg: Would you mind giving me a few minutes to review your previous chats?

Me: I bought a MJPlus through radioshack. I got a phone number assigned. I can dial out to

any number using it. Cellphones can dial into me. The local area code is blocked from

    reaching me on it.

    Me: Yes, I can wait.

    Meg: Thank you.

Meg: Please wait while I check that for you

Meg: Thank you for patiently waiting. I appreciate your patience.

Me: My daughter has a Verizon cellphone with 443 area code and is able to reach me. My

wife has a Tracfone with 443 area code and is able to reach me. Nobody using a 410 landline

is able to reach me. Instead they get a message from MagicJack about calling a 305 area

code first and then dialing my magic jack 410 area code number, even though they are also

    410 area code.

Meg: May I know when did this issue start?

Me: When I go the Magic Jack Plus and registered it. I have purchased 3 of the older MJ

which work only through computer and gave one to daughter overseas in Japan and one to

Dad. We've had no problems with those.

Meg: Thank you for the additional information.

Meg: May I know where is the device plugged in right now?

Me: My daughter overseas has a MJ with our local 410 area code and is able to call our

Verizon phone at area code 410. I'm able to call her 410 area code and reach her, even in

    Japan at US Marine base.

Me: The device is currently plugged into the router.

Meg: May I know if you are using the USB extension cord with your magicJack device?

Me: The USB is not hooked to the computer.

    Meg: I see.

Meg: May I know if received a call using a landline phone?

Me: I have tried to use it with the USB when I discovered the problem, to see if the same

problem would occur when using it in same manner as the older MJ's. yes, the same problem

exists in which local phones in 410 area code can't dial through to it.

Me: I've not been able to receive a call from local landline in 410 area code.

Meg: May I know if you have a dial tone now, Me?

Me: Yes, I get a dial tone. I can dial out. I can even use it to dial to my Verizon landline

phone in the 410 area code. The problem is doing it the other way, having a local landline

    reach the MJ Plus number.

Meg: Is this your Phone Number: (410) 888-****?

Heather: Alright. May I know if you are able to make outgoing calls with your magicJack

    PLUS?

    Me: I can.

Heather: But you can't receive any incoming calls, right?

Me: I can receive some incoming calls. I can't receive landline calls within this same 410

area code. I don't know if cellphones using 410 can reach the MJ Plus number or not.

Heather: And may I know if the caller of your magicJack encounter any error message?

Me: Yes, they get the Magic Jack recorded message about calling a 305 number in order to

then call this MJ Plus number. Sometimes they only get a message about not being able to

    reach the number.

Me: This is the message they get.

Me: "Please listen to this entire message. Your phone carrier has routed this call improperly.

This call is being identified as a local call, and it should be identified as a long distance call.

To complete this call, please call your carrier's customer service number. Or dial

Heather: I see. We apologized for the inconvenience, I have checked and verified everything

here with the information you provided me and I can see that your request is still on the

process. Let me just inform you that during the process you can make a call however you

may not be able to receive one. You can only receive once the process was completed.

    Me: Process?

Me: will this also be a problem when my old phone number is ported to Magic Jack?

Heather: During the transfer period, your current phone line will continue to operate

normally. You may use your magicJack with the temporary telephone number we assigned

during registration to make outgoing calls.

Me: So this is happening due to my porting of the older number?

    Heather: Yes, that is correct.

Me: How long will this process take to be completed?

Heather: Transferring a number may take up to 5-10 days to complete

Me: so, in the interim just wait? What will happen to the Verizon service after that number is

ported to Magic Jack? Do they issue a new number to me till I cancel service?

Me: I don't understand why the temporary number can't work OK in all ways during this

transition, just as if it was to be the permanent number.

Heather: Basically, you will receive an email notification from us about the status of your

number porting and when to cancel your home phone service so that you will be able to

    receive calls with your magicJack.

Me: So, I would then have to cancel Verizon for the number to work with Magic Jack, or have

Verizon issue a new number on my current service with them?

Heather: Please wait for the email notification from our engineers when to cancel your

Verizon phone service because our engineers are still processing your number porting

    request.

    Me: OK

Heather: Is there anything else I may help you with today?

Me: No, I'll wait to see if I still have the same problem once the phone number has been

transferred, ported, or whatever is done with it. Will the other temporary number then

remain on the account or will it disappear?

Heather: Once the number porting is completed, the temporary phone number will

    automatically replaced

Me: OK, I'll wait for that and hope it works completely for me then.

Heather: Please keep this ticket number: LTK5540368****** which will serve as a proof of

    Part 4.
Temporary work around. Set up Google Voice account. Set it to forward all calls to the Magic Jack phone number. They even have a better phone number search function than Magic Jack. I got a really easy number to remember using Google Voice. Give that number instead to everyone. Google Voice also has a great Voicemail, Spam Filter, and you may even be able to export your Magic Jack contact list to a CSV file that will import to Google Voice, something I've not tried yet. When you do that and give the Google Voice phone number to everyone instead, then it seems so far to me that anyone can reach you. The problem I had with local landlines in the same area code as the Magic Jack number can now reach me on the MagicJack, but through using the Google Voice number which forwards the calls. Google Voice provided a call blocking service that is lacking in Magic Jack, or I've never located any call block ability with Magic Jack. Another advantage is if you ever need to change your main number, it's easier and less costly to change the Google Voice number. You can also use Google Voice direct from your computer if you have speakers and a microphone attached.

Combining Google Voice with the Magic Jack device provides the complete service everyone wishes we had gotten from Magic Jack.

You may have to adjust how many rings before voicemail picks up on Google Voice or the MagicJack system, depending on which one you want to handle the Voice Mail.

    Part 5

    FIXED!
Once the transfer aka "ported" of my old phone number was completed most problems cleared up. I still had a conflict between the Verizon landline and the Magic Jack Plus line, but I discovered that was due to not disconnecting the Verizon line physically on my home system. I did that and then plugged the phone cord from the MJ Plus to an empty wall jack and now all the phones in the house work fine on it. I have a combination of older type phones and a 4 phone DECT system.

Everyone, including cellphones and landlines both in and out of my area code can now reach me by direct dialing the home phone number, or can do so by dialing the Google Voice number which is forwarded to the home phone. The advantage of giving the Google Voice number instead is it's great call filtering capability, since Magic Jack doesn't have Call Blocking available yet. Google Voice also helps overcome the limited call blocking (30 callers) I have on my DECT system.

If Google would buy out Magic Jack, the combination as a complete Google phone system would be great. Still, you can combine the use of both and achieve the same already.

Remember, if you want the Magic Jack Plus to be serving your home wiring system, you MUST physically disconnect the old landline from it. It's not enough for the phone company to just "turn off service" the old line MUST be cut or disconnected for the MJ Plus to take over the internal wiring and work correctly for the phones connected to it.

One downside is there's no way to turn off Magic Jack Voicemail system that I have found and their site says there's also no way to change the number of rings before Magic Jack Voicemail takes over. That should become a priority for them to fix. I personally would like to turn off the Voicemail function for MJ and either go with Google Voice filtering or my home DECT phone filtering and answering system. As it is, I MUST set my home system to only 3 rings before answering if I want to avoid having Magic Jack Voicemail answer instead.

I discovered if you have Google Voice forwarded to the same number you are trying to use Google Voice to call, then Google Voice won't call. Any phone that is listed as "HOME" in Google Voice can't be directly called from Google Voice.
