Known crooks trying to pretend they are debt collectors.  Anytime a DC tells you they have a "case and that you need a lawyer" tell them you do need a lawyer to sue them.

Since they talked to you (or left a message) they are now required by law to do this:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Fraud, fraud, fraud...they will tell you that they have a "warrant" for issuing bad checks. The case is from 2013, and if you don't send them the money the will referred the warrant to the State Attorney's office.

Uhhh, maybe because the people didn't have any outstanding debts?   Maybe because the caller pretty much violates the FDCPA with every call?

If they do they're contacted by legitimate debt collection agencies who adhere to the FDCPA. If a debt collector fails to abide by the laws & regulations in place governing the lawful collection of debt, that collector is to be ignored. It's as simple as that.

Woman named Natalie Smith called from this number. She could not tell me the exact amount. Just 200-500. She asked me my last 4 of SSN and read some numbers back but I refused to confirm that info. She also couldn't tell the exact date of this loan 2011-2015. I'm like lady I can't remember what happened yesterday. Told her I will dig through my files and she said she will callback Monday. Threatening me with jail time??? Really??? Scammers!
