I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
. - CWG40 replies to PammieYou should go in person to the police station and make a formal report. There's nothing the police can do against the perpetrators of these calls, but, if enough people complaint, the police can go to the media and give out a press conference notifying people in the community about the scam.
Seems a lot of elderly people are being targeted. I wonder if this Anthem breach had something do to diwth all the elderly people getting these calls. - CWG40 replies to DKHThey is not pirates but just folks doing their job. Read the 16th Amendment to the US Constitution.
- Scott D replies to Scott DWell, after about 30 calls 100 rings each, someone finaly answered, and actually said ' Hello?" then silence, and hung up. I am done having my fun. Be careful ALL!
- Jenniferyes also heard this message this morning on my answering machine and immediately laughed. Thought oh I did get one of these SCAM calls after all. Turns out I had another one back a couple weeks that I didn't even know because I rarely use my home phone. That one was an 866 number or toll-free number and I'm assuming they got that shut down so now they're using this new number. Annoying. I may call back and mess with them but if I get a voicemail that's takes all the fun away. Also my sister is my cpa and I'm all square with the IRS or we would have gotten written documents in the mail. Sad for the people who do fall for this
