This is what you should have told them:

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.  

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Calls like that should be reported to whoever handles your security.

This company calls every week and sometimes twice a week.  They are trying to reach a person who is not me.  When I explained to them that they had a wrong #, they became verbally abusive.  pieces of work.

Getting non stop calls from this number with the same message as above.   Have never received anything in the mail and my credit report doesn't show I owe anything.  Wondering if a complaint to the state Atty office would help get this stopped once and for all.  Conaidering changing my number because I’m tired of the harassment.

You should have read the other posts as the places you need to report are already posted here with convenient links for you to use.  You should also consider this before changing your number.

New Number
All phone numbers are recycled.  No one gets rid of a number without a good reason since it a pain in the butt to notify everyone.  You may end up with more calls than before.

They also hung up on me when I asked for information in writing so my lawyer could review their claims

SAME as others - total harassment, SCAM - won't identify themselves, I have blocked calls, and they call back from other numbers. My number is an un-published work phone and I cannot imagine any legitimate company using this technique to get anyone to call them back. They refuse to provide any information about why they're calling - do not give them any info !!

same here as above. said 3rd attempt to make me aware that I have evaded my responsibility and a recording which stated my name wrong came on and they even gave a file number and told me to call them back or they will escalate the case. these scammers have steadfastly graduated to a new level of crime. this is surreal and basically unbelievable. these operations are dangerous. I learned a lot from this thread. thanks to all who shared their commentary.

Claiming that they are a debt collection company however would not provide any written documentation of a claim that is nearly 8 years old.

Same as above this is their third attempt. I’ve been receiving several calls like this for days now and every time I block the number I get another from a different state. Not even going to calm them back or give them the time of day.

A woman called and told me there was a complaint against me re a payday loan. I told her that I thought their scam was sounding more professional all the time but I hadn't taken out any payday loans and based on the year I supposedly took this loan out the statute of limitations was long over and I hung up. She called me back and yelled at me about seeing me in court. I get these all the time. I block the number and another number pops up w same scam. They are amusing but I'm sick of them wasting my time. I hang up on most of them by the second word but it is still so annoying.

Called looking for Husbands Ex-wife. I’ve already given them numbers to contact her on & they keep calling. Said she gave our number on her application. Nope, I know better. Spoke with a John & a Mr. Tittle. Also, told me she listed Sonia Davilla & asked if I knew her, told him no, only from 101 Dalmatians. LOL

One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They often call people that have never even been associated with you because they get erroneous information off of the internet.

In the past weeks, calls came in from TN.  Today calls from WA.  The madness is spreading.  I hang up. I'd like for them to go to my "work" as I'm retired.

This # called have no clue, thus is getting out of hand.

they have been calling my number for 2 weeks numerous times a day and also my moms phone and her work she told them once i tell you not to call me again and you do im calling the police and they called her back yelling at her i have gotten the call from tennessee washington north carolina and they also have one in alaska if it was a true business it would say that on there message system  its riidiculous...

Same thing happened to me today

Called again. Same ol same ol.

I have gotten these exact calls every month for the past 2 years!  Different #,  different state,  call my daughter & mother-in-law!   Very annoying but don't know how to get them to stop!

They started to call me from a NC #, then Wash. # and now they did a St. Louis #.
Saying same thing.  360 2081304 is a cell phone.  I have left them numerous messages and I never get a call back or an email with the info I requested.
