I received the same call from a woman with a deep accent saying the same thing that "how things unfold is on me!" and "Good luck and God bless". What the hell? I attempted to dial the number back only to get a voice mail box that was FULL. I am not sure what this is...does anyone have a clue?

These people are major scam artists. i've gotten several calls that said i had to send a notorized fax to their attorney and pay them $900 or they will have me arrested and put in jail. They're using many different names- a few are monica, venus and sr. attorney jason dasey. They're calling from different numbers and have a couple different fax numbers like 323-798-1733 and 858-435-7639. I was terrified when i got the call until i googled the first fax number, then when they called me back i told them my lawyer(which i dont have) was checking into this for me. I havent gotten a call yet today compared to the 3 i got yesterday at this time! They need to be reported and STOPPED!

I have received so many of these scam calls it isn't even funny.  I have reported them to the FBI and the FCC and nothing has happened!  They stopped for a while and now they have started again.  They are threatening and it is extorsion and I tell them as much.  My call came to today from  415-691-4111 and they are foreigners with extremely poor english.  It disgusts me the way they have  hacked and got private information and have the nerve to scam people.  I read somewhere on the internet they make approximately $8000 a day and because 10% of the people they call are so scared they just pay.  They need to be STOPPED!

    Laura--
It is useless to try and reason with them. They are just trying to make you (and us) squirm. That's what extortionists want. By ignoring them, hanging up and continuing to report their criminal activities to law enforcement, you are not only sending them a clear message that they are wasting their time harassing you, but will also aid in getting their operation shut down....sooner or later. The more reports the better!

Conversely, I will no longer entertain ANY idea of even remotely acknowledging the existence of those individuals who want me OUT of
the way and off this website.

Yes, just got the same phone call.  Was told that I would be arrested along with the people who were the references.  Was told almost just what you were told.  When asked for their address, the guy replied, "Why? Don't you trust us?"

I was called repeatedly at my work number and told there was criminal action pending against me. They said I had to have a criminal attorney that they could send the federal subpoena to. I have never committed a crime in my life! They threatened to send the subpoena to my employer and have me arrested at my workplace. I told them once they served me with the subpoena, that THEN I would retain an attorney. He told me I would 'pay'. They had my social security number and kept reading it off to me. He claimed that his name was Gavin Jones, but he had a heavy accent. He claimed to be calling from the fraud department of the United States Government. He repeated several times that he was calling from the United States Government, and wanted me to give him money over the phone in order to pay the cost of serving the subpoena, he claimed that this was my responsibility to pay the cost of this. Calls me several times a day, and has for the last few days. 415-691-4111 is the call-back number.

To Queenmcneil: I have notified the Calif DA regarding this scam. They give the same info to each person they call.  This is a complete scam.  It is extortion and the DA is investigating.  Please call them too. The threats are simply to try and get you to pay.

Fake Debt Collectors and Collection Tactics

If consumers did not have enough to worry about having to deal with rising credit card interest rates, late fees and over-limit fees, zombie debt, and fervent bill collectors, now we have to worry about collectors calling about fake debt.

While many legitimate collection agencies follow the FDCPA, there are some collectors out there that are only running a scam operation and will be quick to use threats and scare tactics to get you to pay up quick. Their scams turn up in mailboxes, on the internet and through the telephone every day. Some collectors pose as national banks, government agencies (FBI, CIA), or even popular celebrity stars to gain personal information. These phony collectors may threaten to repossess your house, issue a warrant for your arrest, or even garnish your pay check, all of which are against the FDCPA rules. Some of which are even laughable (for example, there is no debtor’s prison in the United States).

Fake debt scammers rely on the fear and lack of knowledge about debt collection laws within the population. They also figure that a certain percentage of their calls will be received by individuals who may be carrying debt on credit cards anyway and may be susceptible to intimidation. When collectors use misleading statements and fail to provide identification, they are breaking the law. Never pay money to a possible thief. Keep cool when you hear from collectors to avoid this collection abuse.

Many times, people who took out payday loans online in the past are most susceptible. If you took a payday loan, be aware scammers may have access to your Social Security number and other personal information, and keep your guard up against such tactics.

Ironically, real "deadbeats" probably wouldn't fall for these scammers, since they have no intention of repaying their creditors anyway. But upright citizens may doubt themselves, thinking they've forgotten to pay a bill. Many times, the sums involved tend to be fairly small, so some people may be tempted to just pay the "bill" and "get it over with."

Ways to Protect Yourself Against Debt Collection Scams

Review your credit report frequently to find inaccuracies.
Be aware of your current creditors and how much you owe.
Ask creditors for identification before you provide any information over the telephone.
    Reporting Fake Debt Collectors

If you ever receive a call from anyone identifying himself as a debt collector, the law requires that the debt collector provide you with identification, and that the debt collector refrain from making misleading and threatening statements.

You can report any problems you have to your state Attorney General’s office www.naag.org and the Federal Trade Commission www.ftc.gov. Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.

You are worrying needlessly - DEBT IS A CIVIL MATTER - YOU CANNOT BE ARRESTED FOR DEBT!   Its illegal for real collection agencies to make that threat as it is.

When they call back  - tell them YOU KNOW THEY ARE A SCAM as they are all over the internet and news.

DO NOT SEND THESE SCAMMERS ANY MONEY OR GIVE CREDIT CARD OR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBERS!

Same thing as everyone above. Calling to threaten me to put me in jail and that I have a lawsuit against me. What the hell!...They need to be put to a stop. Real collection agencies don't call and threaten you. It's against the law.

I got a call at work. This seems to go in approximately 2 month cycles. They tell me I've got a federal suit filed against me by the FBI. The guy on this call spoke very broken English at best. I told him I know they're a scam & that their numbers are all over the internet. He told me I have to come to the court house tomorrow at 11AM to get my subpeona or it would be served on me at work. I have already contacted the Attorney General for Illinois to obtain the appropriate complaint forms. I don't have a caller ID because they call my work but the return phone number is 415-691-4111
