WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam - C. GerkenI received a call from 415-742-6931 stating my lawyer or I need to callback as this call is from the IRS.
- Ellie| 1 replyReceived a call yesterday from 415-742-6931 asking for my lawyer or mself to call back as this same #. The message came from a IRS officer Julie Smith and was actually a recording, claiming I was investigated for tax fraud by the IRS and that actions against me would be taken if I don't call back the number.
I did call back today and was told by a male IRS employee with a possibly Indian or Pakistan accent that I was going to be arrested within 1/2 hour for tax fraud. That I would have to stay in jail till my court date a month from today and that I could not be bailed out due to this being a fedaral crime I committed. Continued at lenght why and much more, enough to almost give me a nervous brake down but never actully asked for anything further, such as money or personal info beyond what he already knew, which was my phone #, name and address. I continued to ask him questions and he finally closed the call by wishing me a wonderful day and god's blessings. I heard in the back-ground a similar conversation via another phone -opperator (?) about tax fraud, arrest, re-possesing someones home and more.- Caller: IRS officer Julie Smith.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number. - D GoosmanThe caller stated in the messsage thet weer the IRS and I needed to call them back immediatey or face severe penalties ,the eve left a name and exension number ... - sno replies to SueI received the same call. It makes me so angry.
- Christy| 1 replyI received the same call just a few minutes ago - 1-8-15. I let it go to voicemail and they said it was the IRS and I needed to call them back immediately or face legal action against us. I did not want to call them back and confirm my number as a good scam number. Glad to see these posts confirmed my suspicion. Also, I have an unpublished number, so I wonder how they got it to begin with.
- Caller: Caller said it was the IRS
- Call type: Debt collector

- Fritzi Hart| 1 replyReceived a call at 9:02 am today 10 Jan 2015. Stated they were the IRS. Gave them a fake last name and they told me I owed 3.481.65 in back taxes from 2010/2011. Told them IRS had not contacted me by mail. Told I had a warrant for my arrest. If I didn't pay they were going to send police to my house. I asked if they had my address and they repeated my address. I told them to send them on. He said you want to go to jail. I said its cold here and I will get three meals a day in jail. Send them on and hung up.
- Caller: No company name. Said they were IRS
- peggyrec'd several calls from this # over the last weekend..decided to call 1-12-2015 around 10:30 a.m. and was actually answered by a sarcastic, accented, male "IRS, tax fraud division" a human voice, if u will...He was verbally abusive and threatened to have deputy come arrest me for this "Offense". Such language this person used and if there was any doubt as to authenticity of his verbal message, I do hope he seeks forgiveness. I know that I will continue to pray for our Great America and real Americans who are actually citizens who can recite The Pledge if Allegiance; know the words to the National Anthem and God Bless America..you get the idea..No offense intended to anyone..we all have freedom of speech and i just verbalized some of mine..IRS isn't well rec'd so why pick such an agency?
