- T| 7 repliesA man called from this number claiming to be a police officer and gave me a name and badge number. He knew my name and address and was trying to tell me that I owed money on my taxes for the last five years and was going to be arrested. He kept demanding that I tell him for the recording on the phone if I did this intentionally or by mistake. I ended up hanging up on him, feeling that it was a scam and guessing that he was going to ask me to pay the money he was claiming I owe.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.
By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.
Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.
They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.
Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.
The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.
If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

- JudyScam callers with a horrible quality recording telling me they were the IRS and that I owed them money. I just hung up.
Generic recording that doesn't have your name or anything, just a bad quality almost un-understandable recording. Since my number is unlisted and always has been, I know that people like this pull the worthless Do Not Call list and get our numbers there. This list has been worthless for everything from day one, except providing our phone numbers to people we don't want to call!
The IRS does NOT call you for this. Hand up as soon as possible. I usually don't answer these calls, I don't know why I did this one.
Call supposedly came from Kirkland WA at number 425-296-0873.
People, NO law enforcement person or IRS will ever call you. Always Hang up WITHOUT arguing with them. Why do you guys come here and post that you argued with these people about owing them money? Seriously? Just hang up. Don't talk, don't argue, don't do anything.- Caller: Scam Caller Fake IRS CAllers
- Jonian Sparemiah replies to TMAY GOD BLESS YOU. I, too, sustained a very significant temporary blood pressure increase upon receiving this "Notice of Lawsuit". Not sure caller was U.S. Citizen; surely trashy, threatening, and probably unwashed.
Voice recording device has same voice as legitimate IRS Offices; so-called "agent" but a thief having a bullet with their name on it. - JsSame call.

- CBI just received this call at 8:05 Pacific time. A lousy computerized voice telling me the IRS is filling a lawsuit on me.
I goggled the number. Most people don't investigate by reverse look up or just putting the number Goggle.
Its a scam. - Dez DangerI was told the IRS was suing me. I received 2 calls in 2 days to call this number about the IRS suing me. I work with the IRS. I know they never call, they always send letters through the mail.
- Sickof Scammers425-296-0873 (Kirkland, WA???) just called me earlier this morning- left a generic pre-recorded message that IRS was filing a lawsuit against me, blah, blah... sent me into a panic! Thank you to all others who posted here. It was reassuring to find out my instincts (after calming down) were right about these creeps! No IRS offices in Kirkland would handle any cases east of the Mississippi, either.
- tiredofitAnother scammer......another blocked call.
- TheresaI received a phone call from 425-296-0873 on Tuesday morning 6/23/2015. The computerized female voice recording said its the IRS and this is the their last attempt to contact me before they file a lawsuit. I was instructed to call the phone number back immediately to speak with an agent. I didn't believe them and I didn't call the number back. Who knows what kind of scam they are running and what a direct call from my home phone would do.
- Caller: Claimed to be the IRS
