Keep getting calls from the same type of people about a file in their office. One was a civil complaint the others I don't know just some file. They also used a name I haven't used in more than 10 years. There is nothing derogatory in my credit reports so not sure what they're trying to do.

They keep calling me about a file in their office and to hold on the line, funny part is the name they say its for is someone I don't know. And they seem to freely give out the file number, seems like a bad business practice to me. Overall suspicious from what I have read from others who have actually communicated with them. Additionally some advice. Would avoid any 'law office' that calls you then has you hold for a representee, one bad business practice, they should be ready to help you if they are calling you! Two don't give these guys anymore information then you know they have about you.  I.E. old names and addresses. There's a chance they will use it to convince you to send money or some other form of asset that benefits them. Research Pig butchering scams and the like. Stay safe out there!

This is not a "Pig Butchering" scam so I can't for the life of me figure out why you would suggest that it is?  Maybe you should follow your own advice and look up what those words mean?

Now that there is enough information to go on

The fake process server/location specialist scam usually contains:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or that some sort of complaint has “come across my desk” and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work they need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and have to be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there is actually a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Same thing...calling me using a name I haven't used in years so right there I know it is fake. All my current bills are under my present name. Argued with me looking for info. Told her she isn't getting any information from me and send a letter if I owe a debt. She said I need to know your name. I told her if she knew who she was calling she already had my name and I disconnected the call and blocked them.

They keep calling me everyday warning the speak to Joseph Murray about a matter that must be resolved or they're going to serve papers in 24 to 72 hour. This has been going on now for over a year.
They want to serve the papers to me. That's fine, but I'm not Joseph Murray. Also, every time they call the claim number of the claim has a different number. How can this be?

I got a call from 307-370-1732 telling me to call this number about a personal business matter and leaving a file number.  My name, the phone number to call and the account number were all robo-recordings.  None of the usual admonitions that you should get from a real debt collector.

But when you call the number back it claims thats all representatives are busy and to leave a message. For one I am not going to leave a messages. 2) I do not have a debt that they are claiming. They said I have a debt with something called 911 payday loans. Which I do not have. Go scam someone else.

I have received 2 calls from (646) 859-8203. They left messages both times stating that they are calling regarding "a business matter" and asked me to return the call to (470) 635-6185 and listed a bs reference number. When I called back, I was placed on hold. When the guy came back, he immediately asked me to verify my identity, WITHOUT giving the reference number! He had my name, DOB and an address that I had just moved from. He also had the last 4 of my SSN and kept trying to get me to verify who I was. He said it was regarding a "complaint against me" and implied tht I was going to be served papers. When I challenged him and refused to give any info, he immediately got defensive and threatening. He was not professional at all. This was an obvious scam, but scary as they did have some of my info. Be careful!!

I’ve gotten calls from this number for years formed wife who I haven’t seen in 17 years. Told them this and asked to be removed but every so often I get another call. Today maybe they caught me n a bad day for them because I went off when they hung up in my face so I preceded to use burner phones to call every two seconds until they agreed they would never call me again lol. Only took about 2-300 calls or so and I told them if they called me again I would repeat the process for every call I got lol. Fingers crossed they dont call back but hey I’m retired and petty too lol. Oh and each call I just asked have I been removed yet nothing derogatory or mean.
