Someone called me from this number today asking me for information about a friend of mine. I asked what is this about? They told me it was for a credit reference and asked me to verify his phone #, where he worked, and his address. He has used me as a job refererence before but I was hesitant to give them any info. I called him and he said he had not applied for any credit or jobs lately.

The company is Americredit. They do car loans. If someone you know used you as a reference when they got their car loan, and they get behind on payments, the company will call you. They called me and said that my sister had listed me as a reference. I opened up a little to much because I thought it was for a job or something. Now that I admitted who I am, they call non-stop. There are numerous complaints on the internet about this company's collection practices.

These people called and left a msg looking for my dads brother who I don't even speak to. I don't even have the same last name as him so how they connected me to him, I don't know? I called back and left them a msg stating that they are never to call me again. This is really ridiculous that I'm being harassed by collections for my astranged uncle!

I just received a call from this number. She said she was from GM Financing. I asked how she got the number and she wouldn't tell me. So I told her I couldn't give her any information either.

Someone by the name of Sophia called, said she was calling as a reference for a co-worker I know.  How she got this info and connected us is beyond me.  She then said it was for credit reasons and wanted to contact him.  I didn't give her any of his info.  I told her I would give him her info and have him contact her.  When I confronted him about it he denied sharing any of my information with her or knowing anything about it.

They Called asking for a person I never heard of. Said that person put my name down as a relative and secondary contact. Then asked me if that person was related to another person with my same last name. Turned out that person is my stepmother but I did not tell them that on the phone. Freaky! I told her this was wrong and take my number off list. Never heard from them again. Weird!!

I got a call from this company asking for my husband...regarding HIS SON, who we have little contact with.  How they got MY number, I don't know.  They left me a message with a person's name and 800 number and extension for my step son to call.  If it's regarding a car loan, that's very strange because he is no longer allowed to drive.  I should file a complaint!!

"[They] were looking for a friend who put me down as a reference."

Is it true that people have to provide personal references a lot these days?  The only time I've had to do that was when I was applying for jobs forty years ago.  I've never been asked for personal references to get a credit card or buy a house or car or to borrow money - nothing other than a job application.

So, it would be very suspicious to me if someone told me I was named as a reference for someone.  I think it's a psychological ploy designed to easily get information out of a person.

Is 'giving references' really so common these days.

Pls. consider reading previous posts.  Did you actually answer call, or was it simply a message on phone?  Seriously doubt this is a valid inquiry.  Just a phising expedition.

I simply asked one question.  To make it clear, I asked that question in my first sentence and repeated in the last.  I did not say they called me.
