Received a call on my cell phone. A computer message claimed my social security number had been suspended and I needed to get back to them ASAP. I knew it was fraud, but I called them back and told them I was going to call the FBI as I knew they were a bunch of criminals trying to get my SS# and other information to steal my identity. As usual with these fraudulent calls, the person I spoke to could barely speak English. The women hung up immediately.

I have been receiving calls from this number for two days now. I finally answered one of them and the message said my SS# was being suspended. I hung up immediately and decided to report the number.

I just received the same phone call from a lady who said she was in Washington D.C. even though the area code she dialed from was in OR--her English was very bad.  She said that I had federal charges against me because a drug dealer's car had been rented under my name and social security number.  She transferred me to her "manager" and at that point he (who incidentally also spoke very bad English) asked me if I had any questions for him, and at that point I told him that I did not, and that I was recording the conversation (I suspected this was a scam).  At that point he said it was OK that I was recording because he and the federal government were recording it as well.  He then gave me a "good bye, God bless you" and I told him to screw himself and then hung up.  I was and am very pissed off about this!  Is there some way to catch these people??

Oh, the sheer stupidity of scammers! Why would Federal charages be brought against YOU because some criminal used your information?!
As for catching them, they're most likely overseas somewhere so the only thing to do is block the numbers or area codes they call from.

I received the same computerized call today.  I felt angry that someone older, confused, and frightened could have received it as well, and been subjected to fraud.  It's cruel.  I hope the technology will exist soon to stop these types of calls.

Same thing here  My SS# has been suspended and I need to call them right away to re-activate it. If the government can track a cow from birth to butcher, why can't they stop these people? No money in it for them I guess.

Yes, it's a scam. Your SS # cannot be suspended or put on hold or anything else these scammers claim. And even if it could (it' can't) you would receive a letter from the SSA, not a recorded message. Block and ignore such calls if you can.

Received a recorded message that my SS# was being suspended. Then the recording stopped and hung up. This is a scam!  How do we stop these people?

I didn’t bother to answer it and I’m reading these comments and my first question is, how do you suspend a social security number anyway what does that even mean?

It's scammer jargon they use in hopes of scaring you into paying them to not do something that can't actually be done. They're hoping you don't know your Social Security number can't be suspended.
