- Next Property Inhabitant| 8 repliesWe moved into a distressed property about 10 years ago. The previous inhabitants of this property, from what I could gather, filed for bankruptcy. Off and on, we get 'hang ups' from VOIP numbers and numbers with no apparent connection. Today, we started getting hang-ups from 509-331-2367. When I ran a search for this number, I got 'Keuler, Kelly, Hutchins, Blankenship Sigler LLP, a law firm which has not been accredited by the BBB. When I searched through this website, I saw no contact numbers located in WA state. The 509 number is from somewhere in eastern WA state, yet this law firm (located in Kentucky) has no such number as this one that called us. No BBB endorsement, the use of fake phone numbers, if they call us again and hang up as they did today, I'll block this number.

- BigA replies to Next Property Inhabitant| 1 replyThe BBB does not give out accreditation without a substantial amount of money. This isn't that firm's phone number. You need to learn how to use a search engine and how to determine if the search results are correct instead of blindly following what comes up on the page.
- B-Edwards replies to Next Property Inhabitant| 5 repliesProbably nothing to do with the prior tenants/owners, this is just a phony debt scam, or on an outside chance a process service scam. It is even possible the scammers are using the name of that law firm as a cover.
The main thing to know is that a voice on the phone is not legal notice of a debt. Ignore the calls and block the numbers. Never call crooks back, and if possible do not even answer the calls or let them go to voice mail. Once they see you are not a good mark, they will lose interest.
-- See BigA's post above, I also did not readily fine a connection between this phone number and that law firm. That's want gets me thinking scammers are spoofing the name. - Next Property Inhabitanat replies to BigAI know how to use a search engine. Do you have anything else to offer? Perhaps some information with a bit of value?
- Next Property Inhabitant replies to B-Edwards| 2 repliesThat's the thing - these are always hang ups. There was never any demand for anything, no request to speak to a particular person, not at all. Only hang ups. And, in the past, it does seem to be related to the previous inhabitants. There were a couple of years when American Express was spoofing a ton of random phone numbers, never leaving a message. I was able to identify that this was American Express because of the mail that we were receiving, addressed to an (apparently previous) inhabitant that couldn't have lived here for a minimum of 17 years. Eventually, AMEX sent a couple of debt collection agents to the house, stating that they were Jehovah's Witnesses (with no Lighthouse pamplets!) and wanting to know if a particular person - the same person who was the intended recipient of the mail that showed up - was home. I told them that I had no idea who that person was. They continued to badger me. Eventually, standing at the front door, I told them that I was going to call the police. They left. The next thing that I did was to file a complaint with our state's AG against AMEX. AMEX responded and promised to never bother me again. As long as it's been since the previous folks were here - honestly, does SOL mean nothing anymore?- there can't possibly be any legal means, at this late date, to pursue any debts that those previous inhabitants could have had.
- Next Property Inhabitant replies to Next Property InhabitantAND...all those random spoofed number calls after the AG contacted AMEX, they all stopped.
- Next Property Inhabitant replies to B-Edwards| 1 replyI've tried to copy and paste the results of my search here - no such luck. I can tell you what it says and you can retry what I did to verify if you feel the need. Bing search engine indicated that the number, 509-331-2367, was associated with this law firm. The website that Bing provided indicated that this law firm was in Kentucky yet Bing identified the location of the law firm as Illinois. Toss a coin? Who knows. Because I couldn't find this 509 number on either the Kentucky or Illinois websites, I assumed that somewhere in a long ago archived page from another search, this 509 number was identified (clearly spoofed) as being 'used' (in a manner of speaking) by this law firm. BBB does handle complaints against any business entity. In fact, I may check out, since now I am curious, to see if this law firm, or any of the advertised attorneys associated with this firm are members of either/both of the Kentucky State Bar Association and Illinois State Bar Association. Clearly, I have a lot of time on my hands...;-)

The way that you are spamming this thread that is obvious. What you did was you ran a search of the phone number on Bing (I used Yahoo which uses Bing and got the same result) but you did not go to that website and look at their phone number. You simply assumed that the search result was correct when it wasn't. That is an injury law firm and certainly would not be calling you so you reported an innocent company based on extremely flawed research. I also used Google and guess what? That law firm did not show up nor did it show up on Duck Duck Go.Quote:Clearly, I have a lot of time on my hands...;-) - B-Edwards replies to Next Property InhabitantKnowing, or trying to know, the history, strategies and possible motivations of phony debt scammers is like competing for last place. You don't need that info if you want to know if calls from a given number are "safe" or "legit" or to cut the number of unwanted calls.
From years of reading here I know for certain that talking to crooks just gets you more calls from more crooks. If you want to become a Scam Buster in a serious way, you will have to talk to crooks. If you want to live in peace from unwanted calls, there are strategies for that. It helps to know what your outcome is.
