I received a call and voicemail from this number today.  They stated in the VM that they were with the Card Fraud Division of Randolph Brooks Credit Union (with whom I bank). They used my full name and referenced the last 5 digits of my debit card. They gave me a number to call back 800-889-5280 and a reference # to use.  They also stated there was suspicious activity and there was a block on my card.

Before calling back, I searched the internet and felt I could not determine the legitimacy of this call so I called my credit union.  My bank DID VERIFY that this was legit and because i had purchased gas this morning without using my pin number (which is not something I normally do - just didn't have the option at this particular station) they had flagged it as being out of the ordinary for my usual usage of my card.

So kudos to my bank for identifying what is not normal usage on my card and alerting me so quickly.  This, at least as of today, is a legit company and call.

As a former employee of Fifth Third Bank, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, I can attest to the fact that Fifth Third has a section in their Operations and Call Center Departments that process credit and debit cards transactions for many other banks and credit unions throughout the country (as well as process their lost/stolen cards).  When a transaction appears suspicious, or unlike your normal spending habits (especially during the holidays) a secure computer system will flag your account/card and require the merchant to call "your bank" (which is actually Fifth Third, not your bank).  Keep in mind that the computer system at Fifth Third does not allow the employees to access your account/personal information kept by your bank.  This is for your protection.  Occasionally, a Fifth Third employee may need to call you if fraud is suspected and ask your name and a few questions regarding where you used your card (never your Social Security or account number).  If you receive a call from this number, you may want to answer it as they may calling on behalf of your bank, but NEVER give anyone your account/Social Security number unless you called them AND you actually bank with Fifth Third Bank.

We checked this # out with our Bank and found out it is a legitimate fraud protection unit. Please call them back or heed what they say. You can always get a call-back # and then check with your own bank first. Again, it is legitimate.

Got a call from number with a reference # I was concerned and after I called and talked to a real person and found out that I wasn't in thier system and the lady said I may have been fished for a scam and to call back if I get a weird number again. Come to find out later that evening a weird charge was on my account and when I called my bank and they informed me there was a fraud alert sent out on my account that this bank in Ohio was calling to inform me. My bank gave me the exact reference number They are a security bank that deals with fraud through other institutions. Felt ten times better after knowing they were a valid company only to let me know about the weird amount :)

This is NOT a scam. This is a fraud detection company that is outsourced by your bank or credit union.

IF you google the 800 number they leave you (800-889-5280) MANY MANY credit union and bank pages come up that list this phone number to call if your debit card is lost, stolen, or there is fraudalent activity.

They were able to tell me in detail recent purchases I had made and they did not ask for my ss#, only the reference number they left me and I verified my name and address.

Someone tried to use my card in Ohio (I am no where near Ohio) and they hand keyed in the number for two $7 purchases. The fraud detection people told me that they do that to see if the card info is good and then they hammer you with charges.

They kept my card active for me to withdraw cash and then deactivated it so no more fraud could take place. My CU is going to issue me a new card.

NO A SCAM... We received a voice mail from them concerning a suspicious charge.  We googled the number and wound up here. Seeing that it was a legitimate call we called back and found that someone had attempted to call by phone and charge $1.26 to a hotel out of state.
    THANKS

This number is legit though I would never give my ssn out to anyone that calls me. You can fake the incomming number shown on caller id. I always look them up and call back if I know them. If not I do not call them back.

In this case my CC is blocked until I call. So this number is legit but always call them back on a known 5/3 number. I was given another number to the fraud department, 866-442-0251 that I got from the main 5/3 call in center but he said the 513-579-5353 is a good number.

Rec'd a call at 7:10am today. For one, too early for any call of this nature. For two,
have never had an account of any type with Fifth Third. Thinking this is fraud.

This is the legitimate 5/3 fraud department (although they may service other banks). I called them back after listening to a voicemail and seeing that my online access to my account was blocked. They did not ask for any personal information like SSN, and were just checking to verify a transfer into my account. I verified a few details, and they unlocked the account. It's legit.

Legitimate Fifth-Third Bank anti-fraud call. Calling because I had accessed my account from a different location than usual (because my VPN was left on and it redirects traffic).

    TRUTH
THIS NUMBER IS A LEGIT FRAUD DEPARTMENT - Voice mail from this number said it was 5/3 Bank fraud department and to return call.  I googled phone number and found this site stating it was legit.  Called my local bank and they confirmed my card had a block on it due to possible fraud.  The bank then gave me the same number as the voice mail to call and report.  I was told of 2 transactions that I did not make and they are issuing me another card.  I rarely ever leave the house to make charges.  They suspect possibly due to the Anthem Healthcare System being hacked and that is possible as we did have Anthem Health in the past.  ***Advice if you are not sure call or go in to your local branch and they can look up any problems.*** If it can happen to me it can happen to anyone!!
