craigslist scammers say they can only pay you via check and that they will pay you excess to pay a third party mover, scam!

Craigslist, Kiiji, AutoTrader, Etc. Scam:

The scam works like this.  Communication is always by text or email for some made up reason such as they are deaf, they deployed and can't use their phone (then how did the text get out?), etc.  They think your item as described is perfect.  They might ask a few questions about it, and then will pay your asking price, sight unseen, because they are never around close by to come look at it (they use the stationed somewhere in the military a whole lot, or working overseas, or on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, or simply fill in your own job here).  They will give you an extra $40 or $50 to hold it for them.  Then they tell you they will send a cashier’s check or money order for that amount plus extra for the “shipper”.  They count on the fact that people don’t know or realize that the funds being made available by the bank and the check actually clearing are two completely different things.  They ask you to wire that extra money by untraceable means such as Western Union or Moneygram.  The check or money order turns out to be bogus and you end up out the money you sent plus the bank fees.  Also, if the check is big enough you may end up being charged criminally.  Take the check and the envelope it came in to the post office and have them forward it to the postal inspectors.
In the case of them using PayPal, the same thing happens.  They send a fake email looking like it came from PayPal, get you to pay the shipper, and then find out that the e mail was fake and no money is available.

Texted me about a post for a bedset. Asked me what my best price was. Said I was negotiable and asked what they were willing to pay. Refused to give a price and continued to ask what my best price was. As soon as I gave a price they accepted and said they would send a cashiers check with the movers money added in. Then asked me to take the ad down. When I notified them that I knew it was a scam they attempted to assure me it wasnt.

Okay,Good price.I'll send you a check & include my Movers money. deduct your pay, the leftover fund will be given to the movers when they come for pick up. Ok?

Just received the same spiel this afternoon. Name Patrice Jones. Told her I would only accept cash. She said she made a mistake and that ended that. Scam!!!

This party attempted the same scam with me for a Craigslist item valued at 50.00, they gave the spill about the money order and movers as well, I refused to do the deal, then she said, (via text), that she would then send a personal check, that she needed my name and address, I  never responded back; knowing that it was a scam.

If you sell anything on craigslist, add the words "CASH ONLY, LOCAL ONLY" to your ad.

Same scam here ... send cashiers check, give the movers their cut. Etc,etc.... they need a real job!!

Text message to inquire about price of an item for sale. Wanted to arrange payment via cashier's check to pay for item and money for a 3rd party mover.

Same thing received text Patrice Jones, asking about price etc. agreed on a price, asked for my address (gave fake address and name) because it sounded fake....send cashiers check, give the movers their cut.

Thank Goodness for your post. We just received a check in the mail today for this person for a 200 purchase she stated she was including the extra for to pay the movers. When I saw the amount of the check I started searching the name and came across this post. This check is not going anywhere near my bank. Thanks for the advice on what to do. I have a friend in the sheriffs office I will be contacting also!!  As soon as I saw the amount I was like this is fish as it gets!
