- Sharon replies to Very Suspicious!I've had countless calls from these people saying they are from Microsoft. On one call the guy said they would have to shut down my computer for three days. When I tell them I do not have a Microsoft account, they hang up but then a few days later they call back. Today when I answered the phone, there was silence, then a recording said, "good-bye".
- M FThe caller pretends to be from the Microsoft Tech Support. Clearly a scam; the real Tech Support will not call anyone if the customer did not initiate the contact.
The scammer wanted me to press the Windows key and the R key. Since most of Windows users aren't familiar with that feature, it is easy to get them run some diagnostics and pretend that the output shows a problem, even if the computer is in fact perfectly fine. Then, it's time to fish for user names / passwords / credit cards etc, supposedly to fix the problem.
I played an idiot for some time, pretending to be too stupid to execute that shortcut. Then both of us got tired and we hang up.
If you aren't into playing cat-n-mouse, then you should hang up on them, or refuse to do anything they ask you to do. And, warn your family members.- Caller: 516-262-4297
