- somewhat confusedI recieved a phone call from "Ashley" stating that she needed to speak to me and mentioned something about my last employer. She made it sound as if it was an important matter regarding the job I had done. I claimed that I wasn't available because I wanted to check the number. Now I'm reading all of these reports and remembered getting a call from them before but the message I thought was from someone trying to offer me some type of line of credit. The only 'debt' I have right now is owed to my mom and I know she wouldn't hire an agency. How does a collection agency get that sort of info and why can't they just state what they are up front?

- William Robert| 1 replyFirst off, its interesting that people run from thier obligations. I to have been contacted by Surety Acceptance Corporation. I in fact owed a medical debt and quite frankly didnt pay it because it was never at the top of the list. Collectors have a very difficult job trying to collect money due thier clients for services recieved. I was contacted topay my obligation and when I informed them I did not have the money in full, they set up a very manageable monthly payment. How woul you feel if you owned a business and gave a service based on credit and people stiffed you? Man up, stop bitching and pay your obligations. Then they will have no reason to contact you.

- HenrySo I get a call from these people about a month ago. "Hi, this is Jordan, is ______ there?" "Who is this?" "Jordan, is ______ there?" Then I asked, "who are you with?" and she spouted out a business name however it wasn't Surety Acceptance, she said something else. I told her the person she was looking for was my brother and that I was just asking because he didn't live with me anymore. She gives me the name Surety Acceptance finally and then demands, "Now put him on the phone." I tell her I can take a message for him at the moment. She then asks, "Where is he?!" "He doesn't live here and I'm not sure where he is." "Then why are you taking messages?!" *click* Our phone has no answering machine so if it rings, they get no satisfaction of filling up a mailbox. A month goes by, no calls and then finally the other day I get the same call, "Hi, this is Jordan, is _____ there?" I tell her he didn't live there and that they're calling the wrong number. She then goes to ask, "Well if you can tell me who's name is associated with this number I'll stop calling, it's that simple." I give her my name and she tells me, "Nope, that's not it." Give her my brothers name who is actually paying for that phone thinking she got it out of the phone book, "Nope, I'll call back tomorrow." *Click*. Filed a police report and dropped off a notarized copy of a lease agreement stating by law who is allowed to live at my house and a notarized sheet from cox saying who the phone number is signed to and paid by. I was told it was a supervisor but we'll see what happens tomorrow.
At the other guy, Mr. "Pay your bills you morons" Billy Bob aka William Roberts aka a person that works for this company. People hire collection agencies for the facade that, "Oh johnny boy, you've done it now." It saves a company face to hire someone else to do it, gives the illusion that it's going up a ladder when really it's going down and they don't have to represent themselves when their billing dept starts to be forceful and using questionable tactics. This is a new company, bought out more recently than most. I live in Tucson, I see their ads to hire and I've been to an interview with them. They only pay out comission to their employees, if you can't collect enough money, they say you're a loss and don't pay you your hours then toss you as voluntary quit as failure to perform. This is a bad company and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Also, anyone that has to pay off debt and it goes as far as collections, you CAN go to who you owe after they've started using these people and pay off your debt personally to them. I've had my own experience with a questionable hospital bill. My next to last check never made it and no one had informed me, I run my own small business and use my personal checking account so if my books aren't spot on I usually don't question it until a few months later. So these guys call me 6 months later, rude and telling me if I don't pay out they would have to come to my door to collect. 4th phone call one of them tells me what it's about, I call up the hospital and as it turned out, they misplaced it and then put it in a filing cabinet as if it were a voided/bad check. I ended up paying 1/2 of what that was because they screwed up but after 15 minutes of chatting these debt people are paid a percentage of what the collection is because for a business to collect money from you in court, it costs them money to make a case. DEBT COLLECTORS ARE UNDER NO CONTRACT WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS NOR THE OTHER WAY AROUND. Why do you have 30 days to dispute a claim? Do not pay these people, pay the company you owe money to directly and work out payments within that 30 day lapse.
WHEN A DEBT COLLECTOR CALLS YOU JUST ASK WHAT ABOUT AND SAY "THANK YOU" THEN HANG UP! Do not accept their phone calls under any circumstance after that and contact who you owe, this is a main reason why they do not want to provide that information and will sometimes go as far to say that they're customer is "confidential information" that they cannot disburse. You can set up payments with anyone, it's just who you talk to and what you can do. If you're having a hard time, you have a better shot with the people you owe than the people are being paid to ride you out.
If they call you after the debt has been settled, you've told them it was a wrong number, sent them money yourself and they want more, find your local police non-emergency number and take the proper steps in filling a report. The notarized notices are good but if you just want something immediate, file a report then send them that information. They might not stop but that's when they police will hit them up with fines since they are a business and then they'll have to pay federal on top of that.
These people stay in business because the company you owe money to doesn't want to take you to court. It's cheaper for them and they're AFRAID that you'll let them take it to court. Remember that to stay strong, don't argue that fact because they'll lie and do what you can to pay off some of it.
IF YOU WANT TO PLAY DIRTY!
Mail a check to the company you owe, not the collector, use amounts like $5 on a paper check or money order and state that it's being paid towards your bill. Watch it go through. Ask the collector the amount next time they call and tell them that's not the right amount and to stop calling you. By law they have to quote what the company told them. Read into it more though, I don't want to be the one responsible for sending this technique out but if you do it right, you can sue them each time you RECORD a call and they misquote the amount. I had to go through that when one of them tried to be cheeky and have me send money to his home address THEN quoted me owing nearly $600 when it was really $12. $2 checks every 4 days, dropped them off at the company, recorded the conversations from the collector. Sent out that information to a federal office and I get a reply to confirm what happened and a notarized signature for each count against them. The government is the best collection agency, how do you fight the man? 20 signatures later I felt pretty damn good.- Caller: Surety Acceptance

- ElizabethGot a phone call from this #. Only answered because I thought it was my Doc. I was walking back from my son's bus stop and he was trying to run off on me so I couldn't understand what she was saying. I said that she had the wrong # being pulled one way by the dog and one way by the four year old. Then she said something about a talking to a male last week and he said I wasn't available. I said that I doubted that that no male should be answering my phone. Then she said saying something about not being who I am or something like that I'm only hearing half of what she's saying. Then she said something about an investigation. I think my response was whatever I have to go or something along that line. What can I say I'm five months pregnant with a run away four year old and a dog going to opaset direction. I saw that they are a date collector when I looked them up. According to my record I owe no one money so I don't know why they are calling me.

- Lacey FaudrinI got a call from "Mark Ross" asking to speak to my husband. I asked who it was and he said, "Mark." I asked him what company he was from so I could take a message and he said, "What are we playing 20 questions just put Mike on the phone." I hung up. I googled the number and found out that it was a debt collector and we are currently in Chapter 7. I didn't think that they could call you. None the less I have passed the information onto my lawyer.

- Lori replies to a humanI keep getting calls but no messages left. I pull my credit report yearly and have never seen this Collection Agency. Since all my medical bills are paid in full by my primary and Medicare, I have not paid a medical bill in 5 years. I recently had tranplants and noted all bills have been paid by my medical insurance. Would be nice if they left a message. I also noticed that no name is listed on my caller ID just the number, which is illegal. All numbers must have a name and number listed on caller ID according to the FTC.
William Robert I am sure you work for this company. If they did a little research you might realize that errors do occur if certain medical offices are not paid within a certain amount of days after service. You may also realize that insurances do not always file your claim the day they receive it. You may also realize that if you pay the mediccal bill directly to the medical institution, they may not report it to you ...as has happened to many in the past.
I am a CPA...please check the laws regarding misleading collection info, and a name along with the phone number of the company calling. It is the law . Perhaps a little less time calling names and making accusations on a message board would be more prudent - ChrisThese people called a job that I haven't worked at in 2 years, and then talked to my sister. She made it seem like we were friends, etc. Not cool!! Do NOT call them back!!
- SheltieI keep receiving calls from this number. They claim to be a medical collection agency. I asked for whom they were calling and they asked my name I asked for a breakdown of the charges and whom they were for. When I heard the names I knew they were the X's. When I told them that they said "well your name is on them also so you are responsible for them." I went to give them the X's number and they said "YOU are responsible since your name is on them too DUUUUHHH. First off this is an illegal practice. I filed a complaint against them and since Oh well I recorded the conversation, they are being investigated now. A collection agency cannot call a spouse and hold them responsible. That too is the law. They cannot divulge any information to anyone but the party themselves. This is one unscrupulous company The caller MUST identify the company they are calling from ( also the law) so leaving a message with just a name and no company name is illegal

- Lily replies to William RobertHey, I totally agree with you. My only problem is that they called saying I owe money from 3 years ago. I have absolutely no recollection of this bill so I asked if they could mail it to me so I could see for myself. So far I have not received anything in the mail and they continue to call me. With so many phone scams out there, I am not just gonna give anyone my credit card unless I know exactly what I'm paying for.
- Thomasslimy debt collectors. They actually hung up on ME when I called to ask what it was about. Apparently they don't like getting calls either or something. Obviously they are a lower level bill collecting company not properly trained on techniques to do their job. Their clients should rethink their contract with this company.

- BlueThey just called me, left no message. I didn't answer. As far as I know I do not owe anyone money. I probably get 5 to 10 calls a day from random (mostly 1-800) numbers. I never answer any calls from unknown callers, but getting all the calls is extremely annoying and has gotten much much worse in the last year or two.

I have had the same address for over 30 years and have never received anything in the mail from anyone re any debt because I have no debt. I have also had my same phone number for over 30 years. Whoever this pest is that continues to call has me seriously thinking about changing my phone number.
