- Bill replies to Tamianth| 15 repliesSomewhat agree with you, but there are a few problems with blocking calls- usually the scammers use multiple numbers, and each one will have to be blocked as they appear, it does nothing to help warn others of the scam, and MOST important is the fact that the scammers appreciate those that are aware of the scam, are not potential victims, and block their calls, so they can move on to the next unknowing target. Blocking is basically self serving, passing the problem on to others. As most of us recognize these are spoofed numbers, so reporting them Might have some value.
- Tamianth replies to Bill| 14 repliesThe newer blockers can block 1500 with some blocking whole area codes. I nab calls on the first ring, pick it up and hang it up - but I sit close to my phone and can nab it quick. And with the old ancient lines here, it toss's them for a loop. I've got my calls down to around 3-4 a month.
- Bill replies to Tamianth| 11 repliesBut it does NOTHING to solve the problem for others, it only passes the problems to people who do not have the ability to block calls. These scammers rely on contacting folks who do not have the expertise, or financial means to block calls. We need to spread the word to these groups of people. These same people are very unlikely to be visiting this site. Word of mouth is a very affective tool.
- Tamianth replies to Bill| 1 replyMost of my tactics I learned here from this very forum. And I'm not sure what your on about as to doing nothing. Reporting the calls properly and not playing the criminals games are doing something. ROT, if you don't know the number, do not answer! This isn't passing it to someone else, its teaching those significant others what to do..

Merv - Bill replies to CelticDragon| 4 repliesNo, what I have been trying to make people, such as yourself, understand is the people likely to fall for the scammers are those that do not have caller id, to know who the callers are, and internet access to arrive at this site, even if they had caller id. The scammers take advantage of the less fortunate in society-- think about it. If we would let others know about the things that are posted here by word of mouth ALSO, maybe there would be fewer people scammed.
- BigA replies to Bill| 1 replyWhat you are saying is already being done. Not only on this site but on many others. There are warnings out anywhere you go, the post office for example, many stores have warning in them, banks have warnings in them, credit card agreements have warnings in them, TV stations put stories up on a regular basis, newspapers put stories up also. There are probably very few people in this country that do not have either caller ID or internet access.
I personally try to tell as many people as i can, but human nature is what it is, and neither you nor I can control what they do. There are a lot of reasons these scams succeed including greed, mental deficiency, old age which includes lack of taking responsibility for the elderly, and of course being "smoothed talked" into doing what the con man wants.
Right now it is what it is, and we have to do the best that we can under the circumstances. If we could get these foreign governments to enforce even the laws they have on the books it would go a long way toward helping our cause. Good luck with that though.
