- BBBBBB Alerts About Phony Debt Collectors
6 Aug 2009
Better Business Bureau has issued a national alert about phony debt collectors that are calling consumers nationwide and claiming that they have defaulted on a payday loan and will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately.
Claiming to be lawyers, the scammers say they are with the “Financial Accountability Association” or the “Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans” and often have the victim’s Social Security, old bank account numbers or driver’s license numbers as well as home addresses, employer information and even the names of personal friends and professional references.
Phone numbers that the scammers are calling from include: 949-468-5107, 415-200-0274, 213-784-5745, 408-715-1614 and many others.

- LindaI also received a call today from this numberat my place of employment. "The second you get this message, you must call back, or please have your attorney call back. If you decide not to call back, then I wish you good luck and this situation is all on you."
I have had calls like this in the past and I have never called them back. I know that I will never, ever put my personal information on a form online again.- Caller: Don't know

- KayI had a missed call on my cell phone from this number yesterday. The message said it was a Michael Griffin from William Scott and Associates and they were calling about a case that is being brought against a former friend of mine, and that I could be named in the suit. Needless to say this former friend isn't the most fiscally responsible so I'm assuming even though they said they were from a lawyers office they may really be from a collection agency.

- Deborah CarnrikeI've received several calls from this number and they say they are with a lawyers office and that they are going to file a case against me and I will be arrested by tomorrow. When I ask for what they can't give me any information and they tell me to call back and talk to some name they give me and when you do it disconnects you or say's the call cannot be connected at this time. I'm tired of the calls and want them to stop.

- EmilyI recieved a message on my phone from a 900-088-99 number saying that they were calling from a law office and that I needed to call back immediately and if I didn't or have my lawyer call them back then he wished me good luck. He also left a call back number of 714-333-2927 and when I called it back, it is ALWAYS busy and then when it does ring the call is disconnected. They have also called my work requesting information and have tried to call my family and friends. This is the second time this company has called me. The first times were from a Florida number. Is there anything that we can do to get the calls to stop?
- BobI received two calls from these people who told me I was having charges brought against me, but hung up when I asked for more information. The people barely spoke English so it was very hard to understand them.

- PattyWe have received at least 30 calls today alone at my place of work. When "David" calls he asks for people that no longer work here. When we try to tell him that they no longer work here he calls us liars and says we are protecting criminals. He calls incessantly and refuses to take no for an answer. If he believes they no longer work here, he asks for their personal information and keeps pressing the issue when we tell him by law we are not allowed to give that information out. At one point he asked the receptionist if he could call her every morning to hear her beautiful voice. Creepy! We've even tried answering the phone as a fake business name. On separate occations he has asked if he could have a job here, if we could teach him English, called us inappropriate names ([***], baby, honey, etc). He says he's calling from a law office and when we ask for the name and more information he says he already told us and shouldn't have to and doesn't want to tell us again. We've been dealing with this person for over a month now and it's wearing on our last nerves! Isn't there anything we can do? I almost forgot! At first he was calling from a 561 area code (South Florida) then this number 714-333-2927 and now it comes up as a blocked number. Unfortunately we can't block those types of calls because for some reason some calls from our corporate office come in the same way. Any advice would be AMAZING!

- BethDavid Johnson from William L Scott attorney's office called my husband's work several times and left a message on his cell saying that because of me he is going to be in big trouble too because there is a legal situation against me. Basically trying to get my husband to give them info on me not knowing that he is my husband. Heavy accent but very threatening."If you do not respond then good luck to you and we;ll see you in court". Left call back # of 714-333-2927 but its busy everytime I call it.

- SimplyLN replies to Lori RHey there Lori....The first time I reported to the FBI I immediately received a call back from one of their agents who informed me that this is a phishing scam...to not provide any information to these people or confirm any information they have on you. What the agent informed me was to tell the caller they have been reported to the FBI and hang up. Other than that...there's nothing they can do. I have changed my phone number a few times since and the last call I received at work was in January. My place of business went ahead and blocked all the phone numbers that they were calling from...however...they use scramblers so there's no telling what new phone number they would call from. I wish I had more information/insight to provide...
- Phone GuardianI also just received a similar call. The gentleman claimed to be a lawyer and asked for someone that worked here but he badly mispronounced their first name and correctly pronounced the second name. I immediately knew that something was wrong. I feigned ignorant and exclaimed that I was new and was pretty sure that we did not have a person by that name that worked for us. I would be happy to take his name and number and do some further investigation. He told me that his name was Austin White (there is no way this guy could be a Mr. White, much less an Austin) and that he was a lawyer. I asked what it was regarding and he said that it was regarding a legal matter. He then told me that I had a very sweet voice, so I told him that this is a very odd thing for a lawyer to say and hung up. I am pretty terrified! How do they collect this information? How does one get them to stop?
