This number has called me 3 times in less than 24 hours, never leaves a message, and the name pops up as “telemarketing”

So what you're saying is we have no idea who called? Because the caller ID has a greater chance of being wrong then it has being right.

So you saying, I should answer the call anyway. This must be your telemarketing number. If this was a legitimate call, you should leave a message to call back.

No message, caller id stated "telemarketing" !  Must be true.

Not necessarily.  But then, you may be one of those people who believe that anything they read on the internet "has to be true" and apply that concept to Caller ID as well.
The name portion of the caller ID display is provided by your phone company, based on reports from people that are often clueless as to who called because they never answered and just guess as to who the caller is, so it may very well be wrong.  The phone company likes such designations because using them makes it look like they care about and are looking out for their subscribers, plus it means they do not have to pay any fees to look up the number in a third-party database.

It cannot do any harm and you can find out why you were called.  The caller already knows that your number is active because it rang when they called, so not answering really is not keeping anything from them.  Besides, you can always hang up on any call.

But from the rest of your response to BigA I get the feeling that this is all going to fall on deaf ears, since your post reads more like it was written by a Troll looking for an argument.
