Over the past week I’ve received 5 calls from WRS stating Margo Maldonado needs to respond to an import business matter. I’ve advised them this is not Margo Maldonado and please remove me from call list. My name is Mary Maldonado and do not know any Margo.

Received voice message saying I needed to call about an important business matter. They called the 2nd line on my plan. I called back and the ugly lady said she would report me for harassing her. She said they were garnish my wages. Well, that might be hard to do since I haven't worked since Aug 2023. This UGLY lady called me back 6 times and even used a few numbers I had blocked already.

The fake process server/location specialist scam usually contains:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work they need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and have to be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there is actually a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

I have received multiple calls stating the same thing as everyone else- I have not received anything in writing to prove their case. Also keep in mind that it is tax filing season and these calls are constant usually starting in January and going until at least June. Called from a local number 856-335-9509. They tapped into someones phone as usual.

I received a voice mail asking me to return their call at 2623728490. It was regarding an unsettled business matter. I have nothing out stand. And I have gotten smarter with these, look up the number before calling.  The clue was you could not understand the information left on the voice message.

They won't stop calling me and I have even tried to talk to them. The auto dialer says to stay on the line OR call back. I stayed on the line and it disconnected me. Do these people just get a kick out of bugging people? I understand they are a scam and trying to get me to pay them for something I don't owe, you would think they would want to talk to me to try and get what they want. I have them blocked but they can still leave messages, so annoying!

    Really?
You admit that you know they are trying to scam you, yet you still want to talk to them?  Do you actually think that they will stop calling if you can talk to them and ask nicely?  If you do get through to them, go ahead and give it a try, but do not be surprised if they just call more frequently.

As to their still being able to leave messages, that is how most call blockers on cell phones and through phone company services work - they stop the call from ringing your phone and redirect it to your voicemail.

Just keep blocking and ignoring their calls, after a while they will stop, since they will see that you are not responding and thus are not a potential victim for their scam.

Called my parents house that I haven’t lived at in over 15 years and left numerous messages just like everyone else has received. You can barely understand what they are saying. I could tell right away that it was a scam, but my parents were concerned. Goes to show that they probably “hook” older people and swindle them out of their money. Going to try to find a way to report them.
