- Bob| 1 replyCalls where you answer and there is no response are auto-dialed calls looking for fax machines to send junk faxes to. If they hear the fax "handshake", the junk fax is sent. If you answer, your number is forwarded to other telemarketing scum as a "live" number.

- BillBBe weary on this one. They claimed to be from American Express fraud prevention. They knew my name and last 5 digits of my card number, and asked me to verify my identity using the 4 digit security code on the card. This number, while a valid Amex Delta SkyMiles phone number, was spoofed. Amex fraud prevention will never ask for the 4 digit code on the card.

- KellyI got this call the same day I checked out of a Hampton Inn. I notice I get spam phone calls shortly after checking out of hotels with Hilton affiliation. No message. Called me 4 times in a row and hung up on voicemail each time.

- NC Mom| 1 replySomeone supposedly at this number called a family member, claiming to be an Amex customer service rep. He knew our name and the last 4 digits of the card number. He told us that a charge that we had just made through Amazon had been declined, even giving the exact amount of that transaction, and asked us to provide the security code from our card in order to have it approved. We did not provide the code, instead telling him that we were going to contact Amex directly. The legitimate Amex rep told us that it likely had been a phishing attempt, but that a card replacement wouldn't be necessary, as Amex is vigilant with regard to suspicious charges; however, the next day someone tried to charge nearly $4000 at a furniture outlet in another state using our card number, someone that Amex did bring to our attention, so the card was cancelled and a new number was issued at that point. Sad to say, it sounds as if someone on the inside, either at one of the companies concerned or at a call center, is involved, simply because the amount and merchant related to a legitimate charge were known to the other party. As for us, we are going to inspect our Amex statements and our Amazon purchase records very closely from now on.

This is something you should have been doing all along and not just for Amex and Amazon. This is something that you should do for all of your accounts, credit cards, debit cards, bank accounts and you should be checking your credit reports regularly.Quote:As for us, we are going to inspect our Amex statements and our Amazon purchase records very closely from now on.
