    I called them, but they gave automated response: "This 1-800 number is currently being checked for trouble".

    Sounds like they got bent with the law

    Received several calls from this number over a period of four days. No message left for the first few calls but eventually they left one. Turns out the call was from Qwest, regarding a new DSL service I'd called to activate last week. I wish I had answered the phone sooner! (I ignore inbound calls from unfamiliar numbers, especially 1-800 numbers.) This may have been a scam number in November 2008 but it no longer is today.
