Alyssa unconfidently pronounces that she is from Chase Fraud Prevention, alerts you there is fraudulent activity on your account and leaves a 12 digit reference number.  They also seem to call from a 1 (800) 955-9060 as well.

This is not Chase Bank do not give out personal information

The first thing they asked for was a reference number- which I did not receive in the call from the other number claiming to be Chase.  They then asked for my social security number- not my name, my DOB, if I had applied for a card, etc..  Then I asked why they needed it they said they needed it for verification.  It certainly felt irregular.

I received a letter sent by bulk mail supposedly from Chase asking me to call 1-800-278-8830 to verify that a credit card application is mine. I have not applied for a Chase credit card, and I believe this letter is an attempted scam.

I received a voicemail from a different number that was unclear due to static, so I wasn't even sure about the last digit in the number. I did hear Chase.. Fraud... and a reference number at the end. I found this thread and found it to be helpful. I called back with caution, but found the call to be legit.
I had applied online for an Amazon card within the last 2 weeks that was required more information before making a determination (I don't recall the exact wording). The operator identified himself and referenced that card. He asked for my name, and then my phone number so he could send a verification code. He never asked for any other personal information and the code did come through immediately. After a short wait, I was approved for the card and he said a welcome packet with all the info would be mailed.
We do use Norton which has recently combined with Lifelock, and have had bank card issues in the past, so this could have been a cautionary call to verify my ID. Chase has various types of cards with multiple companies, so I believe this to be a legitimate 3rd party call that could be identified with any number of other businesses like Amazon.

One of the ways banks verify you is with those types of personal history. Which means if someone is trying to gather your personal info to fool the banks, etc this is a way to do it. You say they did not ask you personal info...you have that all wrong..

John posted on 27 Mar 2008 and times have changed in 10 years. But it doesn't matter, since scammers can spoof the CallerID and impersonate the bank, so you can't be sure anymore who is calling you. You shouldn't give any information to a stranger who calls, without verifying who it is that your talking to. To verify, you have to call back to a known official number.

Never trust a caller to be who they claim, always call from an official number to verify if they did call.

    This is a legit number.
I put in an application for a Chase card about a week ago, and also received a shady voicemail from an unknown number. This number claimed to be Chase Fraud Protection, that they needed to verify some information, and to call 18002788830 at my earliest convenience.
I did, and they asked me for my SSN. I asked if there was another way to identify myself and he just asked for my first and last name. They just use your SSN to look you up (the chase credit card line that you can use to verify application status asks you to input your ssn to pull up your application. This number is 18004323117, and is listed on their official website).
All the guy needed to do was to verify my phone number and send me a code. I read the code back to him, then he said I was approved. Called the official chase automated number to check my application status (one listed above, and here https://www.chase.com/digital/resources/privacy-security/questions/fraud) and it said I was approved.

I assume this is done to prevent people putting applications in your name. Which also means, if you get a call asking you to call this number and you didn’t put an application in/have fraud prevention on your account, someone ELSE probably tried to put an application in in your name *cough* ssn leaks *cough* and you should probably tell them it’s not a real app.

As always, don’t give your ssn out over the phone to anyone. Just ask for an alternative means of id.

Received call from an 'unknown number' identifying themselves as 'Chase Bank Fraud' and wanted me to call the 800 number with a specific 'reference number'. Caller did not have good command of the English Language and  mispronounced my name. Sadly, this call was shortly after my identity was compromised, and I have not called them. After reading these reports, I do not believe I will call. Freezing credit cards will be on the agenda.

800 278 8830 called and showed as restricted. Went to voicemail and left message referencing Chase Fraud dept and Amazon. I made 2 direct calls to Chase and they confirmed both times that they did NOT attempt to contact me and that this number is not a valid Chase contact. It is a phishing attempt only. Do not call them or give them any info.

This is a legit number for Chase Bank Fraud Prevention for credit cards.
You see so many card brands in the comments that is because these card brands are partner cards with Chase (meaning the credit card issuer is Chase bank - Amazon, AARP, Disney are brands but are not a bank. They'll need an actual bank to issue the card and service it). The reason this number is so frequently mistaken for fraud is because of SPOOFING, were a fraudster can use a legit number as their caller ID to obtain personal information. If you get a call or get asked to return a call to this number, you either have someone applying for a card using your information; or if you applied and didn't get approved right away, there may be some discrepancies in your application that needs to be resolved. Safest is to call Chase customer service and ask to be transferred to Verifications for credit cards before you disclose anything. Don't lash out on the reps if you're frustrated because the legit ones may just be doing their job. Thank them later.

I also got a call from an unknown number that left me a voicemail saying they are calling from Chase Fraud prevention. Left me this number and a reference number to call back. I called back and they wanted to verify my ID for an Amazon Credit card application that I had NOT applied for. They told me they will cancel the application and asked me to call the credit Bureau to put a fraud alert on my account. When I called Transunion, they unfortunately confirmed that they had a credit inquiry from Amazon. So this number seems to be legit.

Do you often look up known phone numbers? Have you never heard of phone number spoofing?

    Elena replies to Tygerkat
No, I usually don't look up phone numbers. I just started looking up this one because it was just so weird for me. And I am pretty sure someone hacked my Amazon account as I was looking through my spam emails, I had 3-4 emails about updates in my amazon account with phone number update and even the CC application that happened exactly on the same day as the credit inquiry. I just don't know why those emails had gone to my spam. I am just worried how they may have gotten my SSN.

Wanted to clarify info for Amazon Card application.  "Alissa" asked ss# and I foolishly gave it.
I wish I looked up this number before calling back.  What a mess I may have started.
