I actually picked up the phone and they identified that they were calling from PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT, which is a collection agency in London, Ontario. I think they we're trying to collect on some credit card debt with TD VISA from 10 years ago or something. Because I know I don't owe anybody right now I didn't even bother continuing with the call. I dug up this info on the web:

    PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS
    200 Queens Ave Suite 700
    London, ON , N6A 1J3

It is definitely some sort of scam. When I refused to give them my home address until they told me why they were calling (they originally said RBC Visa) I got all kinds of attitude. When I asked to speak to their manager they said they didn;t have one. I asked them to tell me my Visa card number and they gave me even more attitude. I eventually hung up.

This number has been calling me daily for weeks. I don't pick up when I see the number in call display. They never leave a message.

This morning the call came from a private number. They left a message that they were RBC Collections and left the 800-361-0155 number (which I didn't recognize - doh!). I called, they asked for my birth date "for security reasons" and I declined. They suggested I stop by my local branch to confirm their identity, then call back. Sounded pretty legit. Until I checked with RBC and learned it is not their collection department and my accounts are in order. They suggested I report it to my local police.

I reported it to the RCMP COLT division (Centre of Operations Linked to Telemarketing fraud). Web site: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/qc/pro_ser/colt/accueil_colt_e.htm.

Stay away of RBC credit cards. Those idiots will call you 2-3 times a day, everyday from 8:00-22:00 even the weekend for a 30$ unpaid credit card balance

I don't owe RBC, anything, nor do I have a RBC account of any kind, and this number is calling me and not leaving a message.  If you owed RBC, they would leave a message.  Think about it, give them any info about yourself and you will be sorry.

ya, I've been getting the call every day for weeks too. I too do not have an account of any sort with RBC. there is NO WAY that it's legit! best idea is to just stay away from it.

Any credit card company, whether it be RBC or anywhere else would leave a message, especially since money is owing to them.  If they call and you don't pick up and they don't leave a message, ignore...if they call and you answer, don't give them any of your personal information.  Ask them questions instead.  You will be surprised as to how easy it is to steal an identity.  Are you aware that all they need is your name and birth date?????

It is another line for RBC Visa Collections located in Montreal for central and eastern clients. They are calling because your visa is delinquent and needs to be brought up to date.

I forgot to make my payment last month.  They asked for my phone number, then name and address.  Then they told me how much my payment was and that it was overdue.  They got the amount exactly right.  I made a payment via online banking and they were happy. Not a scam in my case.

    No more calls!
I've read the stories in this section, and have some suggestions to offer.

To the "collectors who have self-righteously posted "Pay your damn bills!"

First, Yes we ran up debts, and it was our fault for getting the credit cards in the first place . That said, we were long term clients, and had cleared our balances several times (only to run them back up again. We were pretty much maxxed out, and for two years kept making the horrendous minimum payments, sometimes more, but usually a few days to a couple of weeks late. The harrasing calls drove us nuts for those two years, but they would stp once we told them when the next payment was coming, but would start again 10 days after the due date of the next one.
Fast forward to September 2008: I am self employed, and my business came to a near standstill when the crisis began, and I started falling into arrears on all my payments. I paid what I could when I could, but instead of business calls, creditors started calling constantly, to the point whereI was hearing multiple times from several companies almost daily. Income became sporadic and sometimes I could catch up, but by February, I was hopelessly (1-2 months behind on almost everything, and totally maxxed out) If I had been able to maintain my income of the last 7 years of being in business, I'd still be muddling through, but it came down to either-or choices: Utilities or credit cards... and guess which one came first?
So yes, we like most people, WANT t pay our bills and live honourably, but there are times when we cannot, and the last thing we need are rude collectors hounding us relentlessy, making the situation worse.
I will even go so far as to say that these harrassing calls are counterproductive, in the sense that many people look into bankruptcy as a way to escape the humiliation and harrassment.
More to the point in my case, is that the calls, coming in the frequency and numbers they were were interfering with my business, which in case they didn't figure it out, is the means by which I had hoped to PAY them.
In any ase, I restructured things in my business where I have regular income again, but loiwer than before, and the bottom line is, i was so far behind, without a hope of ever coming up from under barring winning the 6/49, that something had to be done.

To everyone else: Here is the solution we found: The Consumer Proposal

When you file a consumer proposal essentially you are telling your unsecured creditors that you cannot pay your balances, but instead of walking away completely (ie bankruptcy, where unsecured creditors are last in line) , you want to make a settlement by which thy will receive a portion of what you owe them.
Once filed, ALL Harrassing calls, impending legal action must cease and desist. You have your eace once again.
You will sit down with a counsellor who will negotiate on your behalf with the creditors a solution which you can afford. They look at your means, your budget, and that is how the number is arrived at. There are cases where debts of over 70 000.00 are settled for less than haif the amount owing to be paid off in monthly installments over a specified period, say 4 or 5 years. the best part is, once the poropsal is accepted, it becomes binding on the creditiors, so if you won the lottery, or inherited some money the day after itis signed they cannot come back at you for a penny more, and you can pay out the balance at any time. Moreover, there is NO interest, snce this constitues a full and final settlement (subject to your not falling behind by 3 consecutive payments, which would render the proposal null and void, putting you back to square one.
The drawbacks? Well, your credit rating will take a hit, but if yu are here chances are your FICO score is scorched earth anyway. Itwill be difficult to get credit over the next few years... but then again, if you are the kind of person who doesn't pay off balances in full every month, it's probably better that you don't get any , an go bac to repeating the patterns that got you in trouble in the first place.
To re-establish credit, you can always obtain a secured credit card from a bank, so you don't run ito the problem again.
While those of us who have used credit and them fallen on hard times must take our share of the blame, the card companies with some of their deceptive practices also must shoulder some of the blame. The card companies (my mastercard did this) also send you notices stroking you by saying how good a customer and what an exemplary record you have at making (usually minimum) payments and as a reward , are increasing your credit limit. To turn it down, fill out this form ans mail it back in... most people do not and end up racking up more bills, and eventually going in over their heads. However, harrassing phone calls as i've said are counterproductive to all. I truly believe that one has to have a sadistic streak in them to even want to take a job harrassing people like that.
Yes there are some deadbeats, but most people want to pay properly.

They do not call from the said 'legit' RBC number but call you from Caller ID "Private Call" unknown hidden number. They ask for personal information to 'verify you'. If the person they ask for is not there they leave the internal/RBC Collections 1-800-361-0155 number and say that it is 'very important' you call them. You call your RBC telephone banking and they don't know a thing about any issues but say that the number these guys gave you is legit internal RBC number. However, keep in mind that this legit number is NOT the number these guys call you from. So when they call you back, note that they are NOT calling you from the legit RBC number but again from the unknown "Private Call" number.

So are you ready to give them your name, address, phone number and whatever else they need to 'verify' you?

The fact that they call at strange hours from unknown number should set off some warning bells-either that or the fact that they start out by asking those who answer the call private information questions about you. The fact that they give you a legit number to call back or tell you to visit your branch does not make them legit.

I visited my branch and called telebanking and nobody knows anything about the 'very important issue' this person was talking about. All in all, I am glad I did not give out any personal information to them.
