a message popped up on my PC monitor that
malware or identity theft attacks were coming
from my PC and that I should immediately
call Microsoft Security Essentials Live Tech
    Support....

it seemed strange...but I do use MSE so I
    called this number...

the person who answered had a foreign
accent (India?) and sort of mumbled the
    name....and added Tech Support....

Like a silly person, I asked "Is this Microsoft
    Tech support?"

He replied that it was and began asking
    questions.... they seemed reasonable...

Until he said that he was seeing that something
on my PC was about spyware or something....

    I immediately hungup....

did a search for the number and nothing
    came up....

Hope this is useful to someone

Same scenario, but it's a bogus message because I got it while using my iPad, which doesn't have Microsoft software.  First call, the guy told me IPad support was closed and to try to turn it on and off first.  Then same guy with a heavy accent answered the phone when I called back; what are the odds Microsoft's call center has only 1 guy?  He wanted me to hook my iPad up to my PC so he could remotely reset my iPad.  Apple would never ask me to do that nor would Microsoft.

Hi...received same message on my ipad and can't get rid of it.  How did you resolve?  Thanks, Kathy
