They called and asked for an individual who used to have our phone number.  When I told them they had wrong number, please stop calling they hung up on me.  The number showed up on my caller ID so I called it.  The recording said "Thank you for calling card services.  Please enter your full account number."  I waited and finally a person got on the line.  I explained they had the wrong number.  He said he would remove it from thier outgoing call list.  He said the company name was HSBC Card Services.

I just got my 90 year old grandmother a new cell phone and the calls started coming from this number confusing the heck out of her.  They wanted her SSN and credit card number.  I called and waited for the chance to speak to an operator.  I told them that she was of no interest to them and that she only had that number for a few days.  They asked for her name and I hesitated to give it.  Finally I relented and gave the operator her last name.  He said, "this number has never been associated with anyone named Humbolt?" and when I responded that it had not, they said they would take her number off their list.

Humbolt is probably the name of the deadbeat who had that number before your grandmother got it.

I just called these bozo's back.  The guy asked for my phone number.  Then, he asked for the name attached to the account (presumably a credit card account handled by HSBC credit services).  I told him Susan.  He said he needed the last name.  I told him that the name wasn't very common and if he didn't have THAT name attached to THAT number, then obviously it didn't pertain to ME.  He said he couldn't take my name off the call list until I gave him my full name.  I said I wasn't giving him ANYTHING since HE CALLED ME AND I WASN"T GOING TO SET MYSELF UP FOR IDENTITY FRAUD.  He said he couldn't help me without my full name.

Then, I thought, hmmm, lets try something here.

I said, "If I give you my last name, what information are you going to require of me THEN?"

He said then he would need something for SECURITY PURPOSES like my mother's maiden name or social security number.

Niiiiiiiice.  I basically laughed in his face and told him to stuff it and hung up.
