    I got another call from # 800-430-8270, Thomas Allan. Mr. Allan states, "He was at my address knocking on my door on 4/17/2017," but that was a lie. I was home all day that Monday because I watched my granddaughter while my son and his wife worked. We were outside and her mother came and picked the baby up after 3 pm. So if he came to my house, he must have been a ghost, because I didn't see or heard him knocked. Besides I have contacted Avvo lawyers with a question concerning this matter and their response was pretty much the same. "It is probably a debt collector trying to collect on a past debt or a scam."

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
    Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    I received a phone call from 800-430-8270. The man said his name was Thomas Allen and that I needed to contact this number with my summons #. If I don't do this today he will come to my place of employment and serve me with papers. He didn't even have my correct address. If he really was a server he would have known my true address because I have lived there for 3 years. It sounds scary but I know it is a debt collector. I need to know how to turn him in so he will stop calling...Any suggestions???

    He is a LIAR!  IF they were taking you to court, you would NOT be warned.  Check Alfalfa's excellent post at the top of the tread - then give your state attorney general a call.  Did you know it is ILLEGAL to claim to be an attorney if they are not licensed.  If they call again, demand their bar number & the states where they are licensed to collect.  Bet you just  get excuses!

    This number called my father and told him he was filing charges on me tomorrow if I did not take care of the matter. So I called the number and a Stephen answered the call with "Hello", no "Hello I am so and so with blah blah law office". So I asked for the name of the company or firm or attorney and he mumbled something so I asked him to spell it and he said, "are you serious" so I said if they were interested in speaking to me about whatever they were claiming I owed, he needed to drop the attitude and speak clearly and spell the company's name, address and attorneys name.....that is when he told me to go screw myself and hung up! I tried calling back and now he will not answer!

    I just dealt with these same jerks and I fell for it and they took $207 from my account that I authorized. I am so ashamed of myself for not taking the time to research before I did this. What can be done to recover the money lost?? Can anything be done?? I've already canceled my card.
