Caller ID displayed as "Toll Free Call", following by an unrecognizable number. I let it go to my answering machine to screen the call. A male Spanish speaking representative left a message. Rough translation: "Good evening. We are calling from the electricity company to contact Mr. or Mrs. XYZ and inform them that we have an order today to discontinue your electric service. Your power will be cut off within an estimate of 40 minutes. Please contact us as soon as possible at 1-800-495-1964 for an assistance program."

This person did not say the name of the electric utility company he works for. Furthermore, our local electric utility company would never call and threaten to disconnect right away. First, a process must take place before they shut off the customer's power. Written notices are sent first to the customer.

P.S. - It's been more than 40 minutes and our power is still running!

Got the exact same call five minutes ago I answered the phone and the Spanish guy got upset because I didn't believe him and I asked questions, he hanged up saying "Well if you don't believe me wait and see in 30 to 40 minuets"

This is a scam trying to get people to pay money on a false electric bill. It's directed at Spanish-speakers and the male scammer who answers appears to have a Colombian accent. Apparently the scammers seek out Hispanic surnames listed in the phone directories.

Se hacen pasar por la compañía de luz, diciendo que no se ha procesado tu pago y que en una hora, si no regresas la llamada te van a cortar el servicio. CUIDADO!!!SON LADRONES, NO REGRESES LA LLAMADA!!
