Here's the facts on these scammers. The reason you don't hear anything if you answer your phone is because they have a computer calling their "list" of numbers. If you hang on long enough, they will answer after they are done harrassing someone else who answered their phone. They surf the credit reports of people and watch for debts that are just getting ready to expire at the 7 year mark. They copy the information (that's where they can get your updated phone number and address)and start nailing you right after it is taken off your record. Then, since it was a debt, and if you pay them for it, they re-report it to you credit report and it's on there for another 7 years. DO NOT PAY THEM - DO NOT ANSWER YOUR PHONE - You won't win with them. You can't sue them, threaten them, etc. They just want your money. And since no-one ever challenges them or sues them, they get away with it. Once they get ahold of your social security number, they will never ever go away. They will surf your report several times a year. Now, mulitply by that by millions of people who don't know what's on their report, and it's a multi-million dollar scam. WOnder how they got your social? Just run a list of consequtive ones through a computer and bam, you have a list. Then, since they are a "legitimate" debt collecting company, they can scan everyone's credit reports and there you go. Plus, they "trade" numbers, accounts, reports, old debts, and client lists with other scamming companies. Book clubs are good customers. I joined one, bought the required amount of books, closed my account and 5 years later, here they come. Never got a letter, never heard a complaint from the book club either. Legit, nope, but of course, I wouldn't have any record because it was paid in full and was several years ago. Yup, they got my name from the book company. I don't trust them, or the debt collecting companies. But, as anyone knows, no-one listens. The book company could care less. I quit buying anything from book clubs, record clubs, or anything else. Suggestion? IF THEY CALL, DON"T ANSWER. IF YOU DO, DON'T GIVE THEM ANY INFO AT ALL. TELL 'EM YOU AREN'T THE PEOPLE THEY WANT. IF THEY PERSIST, ONE OF THOSE AIR HORNS YOU CAN BY AT WAlMART WORKS GREAT. WAIT TIL THEY ANSWER AND BLOW IT INTO THE PHONE. Put a freeze on each of your credit reports. Then, they need your permission to run your credit. Google how to do it. Good luck to all. FYI, glad I have caller ID. I have a list by the phone. They try all kinds of different numbers. I don't answer anything I don't know.

keep calling my new cell phone saying that by listening to their message I am acknowledging my debt. I have had lots of these calls from different companies with my new number, all for the same person, whom before now I'd never heard of in my life! I don't answer, yet...they just waste my pay as I go minutes!

I get these calls 1-2 per month for the last 5 months.  After telling them that I was not the same debtor (I live in MA, the "offender" with my same name lived in CA) they finally gave me a number to call the Compliance Office to get it straight..that office is only open M-F from 8am-5pm.  Oddly, they called on a weekend evening.  I'm not worrying about a debt that couldn't be mine. but the calls are beyond annoying.
Oddly, the caller ID first showed 800-501-0909 when they called today, but now it shows 866-311-7847.  Any legit business wouldn't need to shield their identity.

They are indeed a bunch of illiterate bottom feeders who purchase bad debts and try to collect. The OTHER number these jerks use is 1-888-716-0010. The debts they bought up are all written off, so this is a true mob-scam business trying to get cash out of rocks.
Complain to the FTC,as they do not use the proper name of the person they're looking for, and call at unauthorized hours. Tie them up in court, make their life miserable, but NEVER call them from YOUR phone, as all 1-800's show the calling parties number and that only invites more harassment. Theyre calling my cell frequently, looking for some gibberish name their PD (predictive dialer) garbles the hell out of. You are absolutely right to NEVER NEVER never, give anyone your SSI number for ANY reasons over a phone, and even less on a 1-800 or 1-888. I just look at the caller ID, and punch hangup.
The other neat trick, is to get your tape recorder out and record the SIT tone, (you know the number is out of service tones) Get it here, and confuse their machines.

Same here.  I received a phone call from this phone number and they emphasized that I had an unpaid bill from Sprint... when we added up the years... I fourteen years old!!! The young man on the other end did not know what to say or how to respond to that.  He simply said, "I am not sure..."

Thanks for all your responses they have assured me that this is a BUNCH OF CRAP!

Hi, they called my wife's work cell phone the other day - I can ignore them, but they've crossed a line now!!
    Work the credit report system:
Here's what I've done (this was based on some great advice from a WF banker out here in CA)  - the credit report system is designed with a dispute mechanism - I used it and had this dept removed from my report on 2/3 (Equifax & Experian) - today I disputed this at the last one (Transunion) and expect the same.

I did this all online for free in < 10 mins.
The process is informative and empowering - I recommend using it.

Now I expect these criminals will not stop even if the item is removed from my credit report - know your rights:
    http://www.yourcollectionrights.com

    I plan to:
    1) mail them a "cease and desist" letter - like the one previously posted.
    2) contact a laywer if they persist - if there is not already a class action, these criminals are certainly deserving of one.

Do not give in and pay - this only perpetuates their enterprise.

    thanks,
    Fletch in CA

These ass wipes are a fraud operation that buys old debt, and generates false ones to prop themselves up.
Theyre criminals and should be taken down by the FTC. They constantly call for someone who's not here, and they obscure the name to try to get you to pick up.
They also use the number 888-716-0010
Im going to look up their phone provider at work, and call them and tell them I'm about to sue them for harassment, and YOURE on the list as well for providing them service.

If they persist contact better business bureau in your area and they will give you the BBB in the area in which the letter's are coming from. You fill a complaint on-line and they give the company so much time to reply. I did this and it worked.  g-man

I received a phone call today from Lwanga @ 800-501-0909 Ext 13574 Cavalry for you Services.  He wanted to speak to my husband Frank.  He verified the name and then asked me to verify the last four digits of his social security which I did not do.  I will never verify anything as important as a social security number or credit card number to anyone.  Debt collection agencies try everything which can be unlawful.  I would prefer that they no longer call our number again.  It is very annoying.

    Citi Financial hired Cavalry Portfolios
Cavalry Portfolios LLC in NY, a debt collection company hired by Citi Financial to harass innocent people, called me from 800-501-0909 ext: 13558 and asked for someone else. When I told them it was not me they were asking for, and to stop calling my number to reach him, they said since this is the number they had on record for him I would be held liable for his debt from Citi Financial. I asked them how this was legal, and they said it was. I told them they should take me to court and we can let the legal system decide if I am legally responsible for some other person's debt just because they have the wrong phone number, and they said that if I did not pay them, that is exactly what they would do. I gave them my attorney's name and number, and to call her instead of me. They said they would not do that, and would continue to call me. I decided to hang up at this point as it was pointless to discuss the matter intelligently with an uneducated collection abusive representative.

    Somebody's niece
My aunt had a balance with an old credit card that was apparently written-off.  They must have sold it to another company, then sold again and finally sold again with an approximate $10,000 due.  She received the last notice for this amount on 4/2/11.  A notice from Cavalry Porfolio dated 5/24/11 now shows a balance due of $17,388.......then one dated 5/15/11 for a balance of $17,814.........then again received on dated 9/12/11 for a balance of $18,297.  But they are soooooooooo sweet to reduce the balance down to $14,638.  Why aren't they special!!!!!!!!  No other company increased the balance by any amount....let alone from what they think is from the last date of payment.  I'm not sure the state of Florida allows this.  Also, the original credit card company must have sold it to another bank before all this "selling to a third party" occurred.  Cavalry will have to be nuts if they think any of these tactics will get some one to pay on a balance that was written off by the original company and sold for pennies on the balance.

Cavalry Portfolio Services is a junk debt buyer.  Once the primary creditor has given up on collecting the debt they write it off and sell the junk debt to bottom feeders like Cavalry.  Depending on the type and amount of the debt, they may pay pennies on the dollar.  The Wall Street Journal published an article about 18 to 24 months ago about the massive number of large, unsecured (i.e. credit card) debts that had defaulted from when the recession began in 2007.  The article said that most debt over $10,000 was uncollectable and was being purchased for $500 (5%) or less.

Cavalry will often purchase someones debt of $50,000 for $500 and then hope to settle with the individual for $20,000, and if that won't fly they'll go down to $10,000, then to $7,000, etc.  A number of those debts will be discharged in bankruptcy and they'll get nothing.  But all they need is a few to settle or file chapter 11 and all they have to do is have their auto-dialers call and call and call until they get a human online.  That's when their minimum wage flunkies get on the line and try to scare the human into making some sort of payment...even just $25, and that is a legal maneuver that is an admission of the debt.

As others have mentioned above, do not speak to these people until you have educated yourself.  A good source is bkforum.com.  You'll learn how these bottom feeders add fees and interest to the debt they purchased even though those acts wouldn't hold up in a bankruptcy court.  Knowledge is your best defense when going against junk debt buyers.

Be careful.  Admit nothing and ask that every cent be verified.  If you have something to lose, consult an attorney or ask for help on web sites like the one I posted above.
