they left a message saying they were not soliciting or anything like that, they needed to talk to me. I called that number and they said they were AE and requested my full Social Security # and explained that is the only way they could tell me what the issue was about .. I don't even have a AE card... Now I am afraid this is to steal my Id....

automated message from AE to a business line.  We are a merchant, stated to call back regarding an important business matter.  I returned the call only to spend 1/2 an hour on the phone, a big waste of time.  It is a sales call...will take up to 10 weeks to take your name off the list.  Call this number if you want to get to the bottom of it quicker 877.352.6747

"Urgent" message left, purportedly from American Express.
When I called the 800 number they left, it immediately asked for our business' AmEx card number. This was suspicious right off the bat, but also because as a merchant, we *don't* have a card. We process customer cards.
I called and spoke with a representative at AmEx and she said the number did not appear to be one of theirs, and also when they do make customer calls, they always tell the customer they don't have to give out any information if they're uncomfortable doing so. This definitely stinks of phish.

The recorded message left on my answering machine identified them as American Express.  They have been calling me several times per week for the past month saying they had an "Urgent" business matter that needed immediate attention.  I haven't had an American Express card in over 20 years.  When I finally called them back, they insisted that I give them my socail security number.  I told the female representative I wouldn't give her my SS number and she hung up on me.

They called my mom asking for her Old American Express Card number and her full social security number. She didn't give them the number.  I went online and did a search for this number and saw others who have been called with the same.

This number claims to be American Express and they try to get your credit card number or social security number. When I called the 800 number on the back of my credit card, AmEX claims no knowledge of placing this call to my number or any issues with my card. Sounds like a scam trying to get info.

You must work for the company trying to scam. AMEX claims no knowledge of this number or placing calls to their customers.

I received the same call. I do have an AMEX card, but I am so happy that I read this and realized that I should not be dealing with this caller! They did not even identify themselves on the message, just said I needed to call about an "urgent business matter."
Caller ID is blocked, but they leave 800-592-1176 in their message to call them back.

I work for a corporate company and received 3-4 of these phone calls within the past week - to urgently contact AMEX.  I called our corporate AMEX office to find out they didn't need any information from me as suspected this probably was a scam.

DontBeFoolde- DO NOT CALL BACK THAT NO.
This is a SCAM. They LIE that they're American Express calling about a very important business matter that urgently need your attention by the end of the day (8005921176). Do NOT be taken! Do NOT call them back.  They are NOT American Express. If you call back, they'd want to STEAL your Social Security Number and/or your American Express card info. If in doubt, call the number on the back of your Amex and ONLY that number. Actually do that and report them to Amex and to the FTC.

    Scam
This is the number left in a voice message for me to call back.  The caller is a female asking for Sherry something about some important business from American Express.  Of course there is no such person here.  The caller ID shows (954)503-1806

    [***] People
It is in fact American Express. However, if you don't have an american express than it is most likely a wrong number. If that's the case, just tell them it is a wrong number. Easy as that, you don't have to google search a phone number and be a pathetic spy and give out wrong information.

    AMEX is so Yesterday
It is not surprising that AMEX is involved in yet another deceitful scam.   It is time for AMEX to close up shop, they are done.

    ha! nice try
Similar to the other posts, they called me.  It was a live person who left the message saying it was an urgent matter, she is a manager at Amex and it's been reported that I've not responded to previous attempts.  #1 - there have been no other attempts, #2 - they called my phone number but addressed me as my sister-in-law's name, #3 - I don't even have an Amex card.
    • Caller: claimed to be American Express... definitely NOT

Same game - new trick. They sent me an email that had part of my current Amex account number and said: "Dear Julio:
We are writing because we need to speak with you about your account(s) and we have been unable to reach you by phone. Please call us today at 1-800-592-1176. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

I called the number. It answered "AmericanExpress" and then immediately asked for my social security number. I immediately hung up. I have called Amex customer service more than once, and it does not ask for your SS number! It gives you a triage to choose from and then may ask for you to enter your account # via voice or keypad.

THIS IS NOT AMERICAN EXPRESS!! Email, voice mail, robocall, however it comes after you, it is a scam!! Tell it nothing! Email also incorrect!
