    ****SCAM ALERT – Read Immediately****
The Bartow County Sheriff's Office has reports of unknown males impersonating Georgia Power employees calling our citizens from toll free and local numbers trying to demand payment on their power bill.  The impostures say that your account has an outstanding balance and a payment is needed immediately or your service will be cut off.  They request payment in the form of Google Play Card or CVS Money Card; however, the scammers may also ask for a Western Union, Money Gram, Apple I-Tunes Card, or Green DOT Cards.  The scammers will not accept debit or credit cards.

Do not send any type of payment to the scammers!

Please call Georgia Power at 1-800-672-2402 to make payment arrangements for your account.

This SCAM appears to be targeting a broad age group of our citizens from 45 to 65 and over. If you get a call such as this and you suffer a financial loss, please call 9-1-1 and file a report so that investigation into the scam can begin.

Any questions regarding this scam, contact our fraud investigations at 770-382-5050 Ext. 6020.

Scam. José Martinez was the guy who called me. It’s totally a scam. They said my power was going to be shut off at 2:30pm. Unfortunately, they called about my office address and my name or company isn’t even on the bill for that address. I tried to explain to José how that doesn’t make any sense (i.e. he needs to get a better scam but he was a jerk and either an idiot or trained to double-down). I wish I had kept him on the line longer to save someone else.

They are now calling and using Ga Power’s ‭+1 (800) 672-2402‬ phone number also saying the technicians are going to disconnect power, i’ve Received 2 calls in Spanish impersonating GA power employees, but now using the phone number registered to GA POWER that is scary... either they’ve hacked into the lines or the scammers work there.
I already reported this to GA POWER, and the fraud department

This 800 number came up on caller ID and same thing, they say they are GA Power and are going to disconnect within 30 minutes.  When I asked for the service address he gave me our old address from 2 moves ago.  I already knew it was a scam because I pay bills for 2 companies and both are current.
    POS!!!!!

Called saying they are from Georgia Power, said they sent us a legal notice last week and if we don't take care of our account it will get disconnected today. We don't even use Georgia Power and when I told him this was a scam he hung up on me.

OK. This was confusing and freaked me out at first ~ my bill isn't due for 3 days (and I'm on autopay) and I got a call at 12:15 from 800-672-2402 on my BUSINESS line (which isn't connected to my account at all) saying the techs were 45 minutes out and they were coming to disconnect me. Hispanic gentleman, I believe named Jose also. I could barely understand/hear him. Hung up on him, checked my bill, and yup, due in 3 days, no disconnect notice. It's 1:45 so unless they're running behind...

Agreed! It's scary when they hack a legit phone number to call. I mean, no one wants to hear they're losing power in 45 minutes and it's 109 degrees outside... I did notice they mostly call on Saturdays, too, when the offices are closed...

No "hack" involved.  It is called Caller ID Spoofing.  Surprised you never heard of it.  You should look it up and learn about it.  As to the rest, this is a very well known utility disconnect scam.  I wouldn't be surprised if your utility doesn't already have a notice on their website.  If they don't you should report it to both your local PD and the utility so that they can put warnings out.

I don't answer calls from 800 numbers. Looks like it's still a good policy! :)

I have been getting about 10 calls a day for the past 2 days from this number. I answer and its Georgia Power. Maria Jimenez told me to call 1.800.914.7166 to find out more about my account and how I can avoid disconnection. I don't even have a Georgia Power account or ever had one!

We just had a Spanish lady call us saying our electricity would be shut down in the next 20 minutes if we didn’t pay. We contacted Sawnee EMC to let them know about the scammer. So if you receive a call from a 1-800-672-2402 please do not answer! She will tell you to call another number 1-800-320-4806 to make a payment. Don’t let your friends, family or loved ones fall as victims during the holidays!

Received an automated message from this number advising disconnect service for GA Power and we needed to call 800-315-0045 to pay for services or we will be disconnected within the hour. This is the fourth call since June 2019; however, it’s the FIRST automated call. Normally a person is on the other end with VERY broken English advising that we need to pay. They would not confirm account number or address, just need payment. I told them the last time to come by and I’d pay CASH - they hung up on me! I was going to have the police meet them at my location.

They called me in Spanish telling me my power was going to be cut off. It tipped me off because they used my maiden name and not my married name that I have been using for 12 years. Another thing I don’t even have GA Power anymore. When I told her to go ahead and shut the power they hanged up. Hahahahaha
