An automated message comes on the line saying "We are trying to contact you regarding an important business matter.  Please hold for the next representative."  Then a man comes on and says hello.  Since my answering machine ius not capable of responding, he hangs up without leaving a message.

Some lady called me and left me a very vague voicemail wanting me to call her back without leaving her name or what company she worked for. I called the number back and the same lady, I think she said her name was Mrs. Murphy but I don't remember, answered and said she would call me back in ten minutes because she was on a conference call. Before she could hang up, I asked her what she was calling me for and she said she would have to look over my case before she could tell me. She called me back about 15 minutes later but with an unlisted number this time and left another vague message saying she was returning my call and I should call her back.

I thought I was on the do not call list. I think this was a soliciting call, and when I told the caller he was calling a cell phone, he said thank you and he'd remove the number.

Called back and said they were Universal Fidelity. A google search says that they are a collection agency: Fingerhut, Sonic Payday, Dillards, GE finance, American Express and more use them.
I did all this research and they had the wrong number.

It's Universal Fidelity and as said earlier, they are a collection agency.  In addition to the companies already listed, they also collect for Target National Bank.

They routinely violate the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act so if you are getting letters and phone calls from them, keep the letters and phone messages to give to your attorney.  You are probably entitled to sue them for their violations.
