- Sammie| 2 repliesGuy called claiming i had fraud, pay day loans, and student loans, which i have neither, that total 8000, the authorities in michigan will take me to jail unless i come up with 428.00. After i pay i will be left alone and will receive confirmation to my mailing address. He gave me no information or anything. Wanted to know if this was a scam.
- Anon replies to SammieOf course it is!! Tell them to forward you the information on the debt - that's ALL you say and hang up. Do NOT "confirm" your address (they'll try and get you to give it to them) or anything else. If they're really who they say there are, they have your information. Then use your Caller ID and do not answer again. Or flat out say "I know your're scamming, good bye" but they often get mad when you do that and then blow up your phone with repeated calling for awhile. Best thing is just don't ever answer calls you don't know.
- Susan replies to SammieYes, this is a scam. I reported people like to the FCC just last week. First, you have to tell them to verify the debt in writing (don't give them your address - they should have it). Second, tell them to stop calling you. Third, per the FCC, try and get a US address from them. If you can do this, you can proceed further action for harassment. If you can't get a US address, it's not a valid claim/case against you BUT you also can't do anything about the harassment either. (double edged sword) Above all else, do NOT give them any information of yours at all!!!
- ShawnWelp, got a lovely call from a foreign speaking man. Didn't recognize the number so let the machine pick it up. Once he started in with his pitch line on "this is an important legal matter and needing you to contact me...." I quickly picked up the phone and him to STOP calling and remove my number from their scam list. He kept trying to get his 2 cents worth in but I didn't let him. Then I hung up just to have him call back. Answered once again and cut him off in his little speak and told him to stop calling the number because he wasn't going to be getting anywhere with his scam calls and hung up before he could respond. He immediately called back 2 more times and I picked up the phone and immediately hung it up without even speaking. The 5th time he called I once again answered and told him once again to stop calling, remove the number from their scam list and that the person they are trying to get in contact with was deceased. Then hung up on him again. That all occurred in a matter of 10-15 minutes and was an hour ago and they haven't called back as of yet.

They in fact called hr at my work saying I'm going to jail, etc and not too much later like a month, I did loose my job after 6 years at this company. The company believed them versus me being hussled. I even asked the security dept to help me. These people are dangerous and nothing we can do. They change phone numbers and untraceable.

- Tina| 1 replyGot a call from them at home and on my office voicemail after work hours. Called them back and they asked me to verify information. I told them that they called me and if they are suing me they have my information. He then stated he was from Mckenzie and Baker. I asked when I would see the legal papers, why he won't give me details of the debt so i can form a defense. He stated I did not need that information only my legal counsel. I stated that I had a right to know the charges and he hung up. I called him right back and asked that I have information sent via USPS, asked for the address of his law firm. When he refused to give me information I informed him that I knew it was a scam and that no legal law firm's number showed as 0000 on caller id. If this was a legititmate claim he would cooperate with me in trying to solve the matter. I also said he would not have hung up if he were truly who he said he was. He again hung up on me.

- Alfalfa replies to TinaThis is a criminal extortion ring operating out of India. ABC News released an investigative report on it in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

- b| 1 replyA man with an Indian accent claimed he was calling because my name and social security number were filed in a lawsuit in orange county, ca. He stated that he had an affidavit to read to me claiming I violated federal banking laws by not paying american payday loans. If I went to court I would have to pay $8,484.87 I had to ask him to repeat his name 3 times because I had difficulty undertanding him. Finally I asked him to spell it and he did not he just repeated it in an irritated tone. I think it was Steve Sebastian. He transfered me to a woman named Nancy she informed me once the legal fees and late fees were added to the "original debt" I would pay $10,800 once I went to court. She asked me to settle for $793.61 today. I placed them on hold several minutes and looked online to see if this was a scam. It is nerve wrecking to get a call from people like this because I am pregnant and having financial troubles during this time.
