- Danielle| 1 replyI'm receiving EMAILS stating that i have a warrant out for my arrest and that i have 48 hours to get in touch with them before I'm arrested. I called the number associated with it to see if it was a mistake. The 818-666-1192 number doesn't even ring. It beeps once and then the call ends. How did they even get my email address?

- GateKeeper replies to DanielleThis is a pretty common scam by criminals trying to extort money out of you.
If you had a warrant out for your arrest, your local courthouse would have it on record. You can always call them to check, but I seriously doubt you have one (for this, anyway...I don't know your life :) )
Their goal is to make people panic and pay them for debt they either don't owe, or have already paid.
A few things you need to know
-You cannot be arrested for debt in the United States. There are no debtors prisons here.
-No one ever calls you to tell you they're coming to arrest or serve you. Process servers only get paid, and if you run, they can't serve you, and they don't get paid.
Likewise, the police (won't tell you they're coming to get you, because you'll run, and they won't get you.
-Most importantly, though, ALL debt collectors are required by law to send you a DEBT VALIDATION. This has to be sent via USPS (email, fax, and texts DO NOT COUNT) and state when you incurred the debt, to whom you owe the original debt, and how to proceed should you not recognize the amount.
WITHOUT A DEBT VALIDATION, THEY CANNOT COLLECT ANY MONEY FROM YOU.

Here's a link to the laws debt collectors must follow, and includes links to report those who choose not to follow the law.
I wouldn't suggest calling them. Delete and forget :)
