Instead of my usual business greeting, I answered with a simple Good afternoon.  A live American asked, "Am I speaking to Ms. Smith?"  Who's calling? I asked cheerfully.  Caller replied, "Carolyn from Allstate. Am I speaking to Ms. Smith?"  When I asked if she is calling about a current program, said no.  I remained silent to allow her to expand on her answer - the NO just hung there.  "Am I speaking to  Ms. Smith?" she asked for the third time.   I did not respond and caller hung up.  I dialed the number back and reached a familiar voice mail greeting:  The person at extension FIVE is not available...
