- Derlene sosaIs that number a scam?
- Derlene sosaI recieved a phone call from 833-893-0630
But they said they were from department of labor - Paula| 2 repliesIS THIS NUMBER A SCAM??? Many asked this but no one replies. They called me and said that my unemployment will be terminated. Im confused because I work 2 days a week because of Covid19. Im an essential worker and I need the unemployment. Im not one of those people who choose to stay home just to collect free money. I wish things could be back to normal so I could work full time. I called the number back and it really must be the department of Labor but the person never answers the phone. Im guessing its not a scam but Im not sure because I cant find a website for this number.

- MJG replies to PaulaWhy would the "Department of Labor" call you if they are not your employer???? Did you call your REAL employer & ask them?? Would the REAL Department of Labor NOT answer the phone??? The DoL uses 202, 800, & 866 area codes.
- MikeHuntleton replies to PaulaNumbers can be spoofed, so its not really the issue if the number is a scam, but if the CALLER is and nobody knows who is going to call someone else.
Now there are several reports around the internet that says IRS scammers have called them spoofing this number. If you suspect it might be the Unemployment office calling, then go to their website and find a published number to them and ASK THEM if they called! - Paula| 12 repliesUPDATE. This number is NOT a scam. It is the department of labor. What I found out when talking to the person is anyone that has applied and collected unemployment all this time, the department of labor will call each person to make sure they were actually qualified to collect. If anyones job says you can go back in to work, you should. I did but they wont let me back full time because of the COVID. They even called my job to make sure I came back to work when they needed me. Just thought I would give you the heads up about the number that calls you. Its not a scam and I wouldnt ignore it.

- Tygerkat replies to Paula| 1 replyBut you said "the person never answers the phone" so how did you talk to them? And as MJG said, why did the DoL call you? You could lie and say you're "qualified to collect" even if you aren't.

That will be an incredible task! You realize how many people have filed and are collecting unemployment since the pandemic began? I am skeptical that they are calling anyone, just to verify eligibility status, when a mailer would be much more efficient to simply ask some qualifying questions to determine eligibility. Most States have an automated online Weekly Claim and they could have easily put a message on a persons SSN when they input it, to go to a questionnaire page and ask qualifying questions there.Quote:.....the department of labor will call each person to make sure they were actually qualified to collect. - Tygerkat replies to MikeHuntletonWhen I was laid off in April due to the pandemic, I filed for unemployment & they asked qualifying questions every 2 weeks that you had to log-in & answer. Not once in the 6 weeks I was off work did they call me for anything.
- BigA replies to Paula| 1 replyThis sounds like a huge shill setup thread to me. "Oh, I don't really know who called" Then "Oh don't worry this is legitimate". Yeah. Except for one huge problem. There is absolutely no possible way for you to say that every call to every person is legitimate. Know why? Because of Caller ID Spoofing. Plus every State and Commonwealth is experiencing huge unemployment fraud with claims.

I guess that means that if I told you that I was Santa Claus you would believe me?Quote:Im just repeating what I was told.
Well to get info about you? Perhaps to run a different scam?Quote:they call my job to get info about me?
There is a much higher probability that this person is not from UE then there is that they actually are. - post pending moderator approval

No, what we are trying to tell you is it is highly unlikely that the Department of Labor is who actually called you.Quote:........ everyone is a scammer from what you all are telling me.
Asking for help is one thing, but insisting it is not a scam, after being told how to find out if it is or not, is a different matter. It is common practice for a gov. entity to MAIL out a notification that your Benefits will be terminated, not by a phone call. You said that in your first post and in the same paragraph said you don't think its a scam because they didn't answer the phone. In your "update", you said they called your work and wanted to see if you were actually qualified to collect. That is done when you Claim weekly benefits, so that is another red flag.Quote:I shouldnt have reached out for help.
You have ignored what we provided to show it is a scam, as the DoL does not call people to tell them they are getting terminated or to find out if they are eligible. - JacquelineI returned the call. No answer. Message said the following: You have reached Debbie from the DOL, please leave you name, phone and social security number.
The DOL will NOT ask for you SS number ... definitely as SCAM!- Caller: DOL
