Alert purporting to be from Norton came up on computer screen saying that I had a virus and should NOT remove it but call 844-211-5720.  These people are NOT from Norton and I doubt are (as they say) "Microsoft trained."

Use your task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up a window with task manager as an option). Kill the offending app if it is listed there. If not, select processes and kill all instances of your web browser that are running.  Next, using another computer search on "Clearing Browser Hijacks" and follow the instructions. As a last resort, restore your computer to a time before the pop started to appear.

You can try forcing your computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button long enough for it to shut off, and then try starting up again.

Whatever you do, do NOT call that number and let them "Fix" the problem. They'll scam you out of money and the problem won't go away, or if it does, it will recur in a month or so.

It sounds like your browser has been hijacked, meaning there is an add-on that will continue to display that message a lock your computer until the add-on is removed.

If you know how to uninstall the browser and reinstall a clean copy, do so; if not, have a professional who you trust take care of it for you. There are other ways to try to get around this, but they're too complicated to explain here.

My dad just called me and said he got the same message with a loud beeping. He called the number and woman answered "hello" and told him she needed to take control of his computer in order to clear it. He hung up and called me.

Thinking I had a real computer issue, I called the number, there was no answer, but they have now called back twice.  Despite intense verbal abuse on my part, the [***] would not give up.  I've told him not to call.  I asked for the name of his business, he ignored the request.  I'd just block it, but the number they call from doesn't have enough digits.  Whatever you do, don't call if you get that message.  As far as I can tell, they're just a scam and will take your money and do nothing, or worse, gain access to your computer and take even more.  They pose as Norton, but clearly are not.

    I received a computer pop-up with a Norton logo:
             * * * COMPUTER HEALTH ALERT * * *
Your Browser Detected Security Error, Due to Suspicious Activity Found On Your Computer. Contact Microsoft Certified
             Live Technicians 1-844-211-5720 (Toll Free)
Instead, I contacted Norton Support directly (1-800-745-6034), who verified it is a third party number attempting to scam users for $$$.

I had a weird virus alert on my Mac computer yesterday (3/10) — it froze my browser and had a very loud beep with a notice that said Norton detected a virus and to immediately call 844-211-5720 to speak to a technician.  It seemed strange so I looked up the phone number on another computer and found out that it was probably a scam.  I called Apple and they confirmed that it is a scam that had been showing up on a lot of computers and there is no particular cause -- they said DO NOT call that number.  If you get this you can turn down the volume on the computer so the beeping doesn’t drive you crazy.  For a Mac the process to delete it is as follows:

While holding down the Option and Command keys click on the Esc key.
This will bring up a Force Quit box with a list of apps — click on the name of the browser you were using when the scam notice popped up, then click the force quit button in that box.
Wait until the browser closes, then while holding down the Shift key, open the browser you were using.  CONTINUE to hold the shift key until it opens, then release it.  It should be okay.  Hope this helps.

DO NOT CALL.  if you can't fix the computer yourself then find someone LOCAL to do it for you.   Never give out your credit card number over the phone for something such as this.  NORTON will never create an alert like this.

Just got the same message and there is no virus, there is no threat, this is not Noton, and you will probably check clear on your scans.  Do NOT click on it or call the number though.  Shut down the processes, as others have said above, by using task manager to force that screen shut, or just hold your start/off button down until the light goes off and it is turned off.  Wait a little bit, reboot and then make sure your antivirus scanners are up to date and scan with a couple of different kinds to be sure.

What the message is (I took a screen print), is as follows:  "The page at alert.norton.com.computerhelpus.com says:
    ***COMPUTER HEALTH ALERT***
Your Browser Detected Security Error, Due to Suspicious Activity Found on Your Computer.  Contact Microsoft Certified Live Technicians 1-844-22-5720 (Toll Free)"  And they want you to click OK on that pop-up - don't!

It claims you have a really bad infection with trojan.dealply (real trojan but this is a scam - see http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.p ... ly-and-IMURTECH

and the other supposed infection is Spyware.bot, which is also a social engineering scam to get you to call them.  Also, they have a lovely little link that tells you they have removed the critical programs and to restore them click "here".  Obviously, don't do that either.  None of these addresses are Norton.  Also, the website listed is alert.norton.com.computerhelpus.com/index (on and on listing your IP and operating system).  That is the interesting twist on the situation, is their code tells them to display your IP and operating system in the URL line.  It's still a scam. Here is more on similar types of antics:  http://www.welivesecurity.com/2011/07/19/support-desk-scams-clsid-not-unique/

There is humor in it though if you think about it.  I'm sure Microsoft will be happy to know that their technicians are certified to be live when you talk to them.

I am getting the same phony "alert messages" from "Norton/Symantec," using 1-888-200-0594 as the "emergency toll-free number" I should call. The popups try to lure you into clicking on various buttons -- the sure way to get a virus!

They tell me that my "Apple Computer" is infected.

    I don't use Apple.

...and I don't use Norton products either! Think a minute -- if you don't have their software installed, why would you be getting messages from them?

The screen displays the time of day and date as though that were some sort of "verification;" "Only call us if the date and time is correct!"

I can only imagine the lawsuit from Norton when these idiots are caught.

Just got the same message. They even have a beeping noise going off continuously on the page so it makes you think your computer's beeping. Wouldn't let me close out of it, which to me, just further confirms it's a scam. I just turned my computer off and back on. Thought I'd research it and see if anyone else has gotten this spam posing at Norton too. I don't even have Norton. Hope they get caught soon.. sad people actually spend so much of their time figuring out how to scam people out of money like this when they could use their wits for something else and get a real job! Just glad I didn't call.
