- Dawn| 3 repliesReceived a call from a spoofed number that has called my son & my husband leaving messages that Eric Phillips is a compliance officer and I have a lawsuit with a case number pending. Leaving detailed messages and actually spoke with my husband that they are looking for my place of location and to call this number. (855)233-4719. I have NO civil lawsuit against me and that number doesn’t even show it’s a law firm when I googled it. I’m a very private person and don’t post crap online or give out any of my families numbers. So how in the hell were they able to call my son and husband? I’m starting to think identity theft.

- Julio replies to DawnI got exactly the same message today! These are scammers.
- VixenI received the same phone call from Eric Phillip's regarding my brother who does not live with me or near me, we haven't been in touch for 3.5 years. I don't have his number, and I'm sure he doesn't have mine, so where this person get my information from, I need to find out. Saying a civil case is being drawn against him, and my name and address will become public once the case is filed against him. Makes absolutley no sense to me. I went to go look up this case number he left for him... the case number doesn't exist.

- AdelaI just got a call from a local number and this 855 number was the number we were told to call, they said that I was listed as my sister’s point of contact and stuff about her legal rights to speak and whatnot, same as everyone else. The caller had no accent/an american accent and seemed pretty official so it’s probably a pretty elaborate scam they have going on.

- KatCaller called with a 916 number by the the name of Jeff saying they had legal docs to send me and if I don’t call back it would be processed. Called my mother and husband. This is scary and not ok.

- Me| 1 replyCalled my Son first then called my job said I had a case and was ordered to locate me and that he was coming to my job. If I don’t call the 855 number and give them a reference number. I asked him why was he calling from a call center because I heard a bunch of people in the background saying the thing he was he then says I’m in a Coffee shop🤣 I said that coffee shop is pretty packed considering a pandemic. It’s 100 percent scam.

- BigA replies to MeThe fake process server/location finder extortion attempt usually consists of the following:
They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency. They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer). They threaten to serve you at home or at work. They tell you that if they serve you at work then they will need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work. They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID. None of which is true. Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them. Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else. They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”. Court documents are time sensitive and must be served within a certain amount of time. Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there really is a lawsuit that has been filed against you.
It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it. You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that letter you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.
First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file complaints with the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

- enough alreadyI have received 3 of these calls all with the same thing about a compliance officer, case file, and CALLING Anyone & Everyone related to you. Leaving personal info to the people they called. I am a very private person. The ONLY time I give out anyone’s number is for Emergencies ONLY!!! And it really ticked me off that they were calling everyone and then I’m getting additional calls saying “Some Compliance Officer called with a case number looking for you. You need to call them back 🙄”
I knew it was a scam since they had called for my Sister with the exact verbiage 6 months earlier. They had my Mothers info and the car she drove!! Which then I got involved because they tried screwing them out of $1.400. It had my Sister freaking out since she couldn’t remember. what it was. I worked in the Credit Department so am aware of the type of frauds are out there. I don’t know all of them, because new ones keep popping up. But I knew enough to call my Mom at 11pm informing her to call her credit card company immediately to stop that transaction.
A process server would never call you leaving any information like this. A Sheriffs office or a Private Investigator would show up at your house to serve you “The Legal Documents”. Not leave you with Fake phone numbers to call that is their supposed “Legal Department”. But when you google the number they left you it brings you here, so you can see all the information left by people who’ve had these calls. And EXTREMELY important information left by “Big Al” who is Mr. Wikipedia on this type of knowledge and it’s so very helpful!! (Thanks Big Al).- Caller: Eric Robert, Joan something
