- Derek| 2 repliesSame thing as everyone else. I dont understand why they keep calling me.
- Caller: city? OR BBY?
- Arkamien| 2 repliesI called the number on the back of my Best Buy card, (an 888 number) and a rep from Citi-Bank did confirm it was a service calling about overdue accounts. I did not purchase anything from Best Buy so I am on the line with them now trying to clear this up, but the dodgy message and line do seem to be Citi-Bank's doing.

- Bob PI received the call asking me to 855 242-6899 also. I was skeptical after reading the other posts but I looked at my Best buy ( Citibank issued) credit card online and saw that I didnt pay the previous months payment so I decided to call them back.
They were Citibank, asked for the last 4 social sec #.
They knew what was balance was and when I offered to pay, she said she knew my checking account number and gave me the last 4 numbers of the account.
I think call was legit. If I find out otherwise , I'll reply back to this post
But I do want to thank all the people who leave comments on this site, as I read it many times and I find it very helpful.- Caller: Citi
- TC| 1 replyMy husband spoked with one of the representative when they called for me. He said they ask for me and it is about my Best Buy account. He couldn't understand what they are saying because the phone was very static. And he told them I will call them back. I have not call them back yet but they called again with the same message yesterday. I do have a Best Buy credit card but it is just a regular store credit card. Also, I have not use it for a long time. So I don't know why they are calling me. I decided not to return their call and if they call again I will be careful what to say to them. Also, I will keep track on my Best Buy card.

- MaryI just called and was cautious of info I gave. I told the lady that I get a call EVERYDAY from this number and I needed to know who they were and why there were calling and to please STOP. I confirmed my name and the phone number called. She asked for my date of birth and was able to "pull up my account." Apparently this is a legitimate call as she said that I was overdue on a payment on my Citi card. I asked is this CITI or BEST BUY? Because the recording says call this number or go online to www.bestbuy.accountonline.com. She said the Best Buy Card is a CITI funded card. She was able to confirm my recent payment and balance and said that I was up to date. I had just paid my bill so the info she gave me was correct. My finances got scrambled over the holidays. Hope this helps but of course ALWAYS be careful of info given.

- Jana| 2 repliesThey have called me every day around 4 pm for the last 2 months! There is no way to respond saying "Don't call me again." I assume this is for my son's account because I don't have a Best Buy Card. Based on this experience, if it is related to Best Buy - I will NEVER get one of their credit cards!
- Caller: CITI
- Carrie| 2 repliesThis message went automatically into voice message on my cell phone. I monitor my credit card and there is no reason for a call from Citi. The female voice claimed "the call was important and not a sales call." But the area code was unfamiliar so I checked. Most toll free area calls come from 888 or the older 800 numbers. I deleted it immediately and will warn my family members.

I don't know about the rest of what you say, but I seriously doubt this part of it is true anymore and your mistake should be stopped from spreading any further.
Area code 800 was first made available in 1966. (In fact, it's not an area code at all. The correct terminology is that it is an "easily recognizable code," according to NueStar, Inc., which is the North American Numbering Plan Administrator.)
When the 800 codes available for assignment ran low, they opened up the 888 code in 1996. To alleviate the next shortage of both 800 and 888 codes, they opened up 877 in 1998, only about two years later. (Obviously, the popularity of toll free numbers was increasing.) When 800, 888, and 877 codes ran short, they opened up 866 numbers in 2000. That proved to be sufficient until 2010, when they had to open up 855 codes. Just last month, they had to open up the 844 code, because there are not enough 800, 888, 877, 866, or 855 numbers to go around, and they still are looking into when they will have to open the 833 and 822 codes.
By the way, Citibank itself uses 877 and 866 numbers. See, for example:
http://www.citibank.com/us/citibusinessonline/form.htm
Given the popularity of toll free numbers these days and the speed at which the newer codes are being put in "jeopardy," as is said in telephone jargon, there are probably more calls "coming from" the newer numbers as from the older numbers, as you define these terms. - KarenThis is a scam. Social Engineering at its finest. I began getting these calls after I responded with an inquiry on a real estate website. I never recieved the calls prior to that inquiry. DO NOT give them any information about you AT ALL!! They are looking to steal your identity.
If you are concerned about your Best Buy, or any Citi account, call the number on the back of the card rather than calling the number from the voicemail. Do not give them ANY of your information.- Caller: FRAUD/SCAM/SOCIAL ENGINEERING
- Karen replies to Jana| 1 replyI doubt its from Best Buy, it is most likely a scam, which is why they will ask for your CC#, SS#, and other personally identifyable information. If the credit card company was calling you, they would have this information. Anyone can say they are from anywhere. Best Buy is well known and many people have their credit cards so it is a good way for one to attempt to get your personal information.

- No BB Credit Card.| 2 replies"We are sorry we cannot speak to you personally. We appreciate your busy schedule so please call City at 18552426899. This is an important message. It is not a sales call and any of our representatives can assist you. Again the number is 18552426899. We look forward to speaking to you." .
I DON'T HAVE A BEST BUY CREDIT CARD. I've made purchases from them but that's it. Three calls in the last three days.- Caller: City?
- RoccoMessage identified themselves as BestBuy/Citicard (or Citibank). Wanted the phone # associated with the account, account holder's name and my social security number. "Confirmed" a zero balance on the credit card and then was not able to tell me why I received the phone call. The person was very kind well spoken female with no accent. Having some experience with this, I suspect hackers have obtained a list with partial information and I are making calls to try to fill in the blanks.
- Steve| 5 repliesThis is just Best Buy, relax. It is not uncommon to ask for the last 6 digits of your social. It's TOO common to ask for the last four. If you have missed a payment, they call relentlessly! Check your account online.

- dd replies to Steve| 1 replyI wouldn't give the last 6 digits of my SSN to Jesus Christ if he called much less some stranger with Best Buy or anyone else.
- anom replies to SteveWhere does it end? ... the last 8 digits of your social security number? ... the last 9 digits??
- M Medina| 2 repliesI too have been getting that same message - 3 days in a row now. Funny though if I try to call their number it never goes through? What happens if you are home when they call? Has anyone been able to get it to stop?

- anonymous| 2 repliesI just received a message as reported on this cite (from "citi". I also have a Best Buy card that was purchased by Citibank and thought the message was really sketchy. After reading numerous posts here, I was not 100% satisfied that this was legit, so I'm telling everyone about my experience and you can judge for yourself. When I called, someone answered saying they were a "Best Buy call center" and then when someone picked up, they said they were Citibank servicing Best Buy accounts. Sounds good. But I immediately got a person (no waiting .... which makes me skeptical). The person I talked with wanted information to look up my account. I said I was just checking whether this was a scam or not (yeah, I'm blunt) and that I knew I had a past due balance on my Best Buy card with Citibank and would pay it immediately online, but I was uncomfortable giving information about myself over the phone. Then he said that would not stop the calls!! I said why, if I am paying my account off online? (and my balance is under $100). He said you have to pay it off "his way" (or words to that effect). I repeated why would this happen if I paid off the entire balance online? Why wouldn't that take care of the phone calls? And he basically repeated the same answer, that I have to pay it off the way "they" want, or the calls would continue. So I'm skeptical. I'm going to go to the actual Best Buy store tonite to ask / make my payment and verify about this.

- CoryThis was a legit call for me. I had accidentally missed a payment. They asked for the last 4 of my SSN or my date of birth. They also knew my balance
- RoseThank goodness you can google this number and be able to find out it is a scam before we call them back. Second scam today. IRS (supposedly) calling to say there is a deficiency that needs to be paid. IRS does not make those phone calls. Be aware!
