A guy named Joe with company Mid Atlantic Services called and left a detailed message on my job's answering machine. He stated they were a debt collector and filing charges of check fraud and stated this will effect any current or future checking accounts or financial I may have. Is this legal?

I also received a  call from this number stating the same. Its just a scam. If you talk to them demand a hard copy of the debt as proof. They probably wont have anything nice to say after that but it is your right. Its that time of year when trash like this comes trying to scam money.

I didn't know they called ahead of time to notify u when they will be there to be served nor call your family members to find you when they cant but say I will be at your home on a certain how is that if they can not contact you themselves... makes me sick that people are this scandalous to get money by making up lies about check fraud or any other kind of scam... get a real damn job you scammer losers!

This is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

just got a call from 704-325-2399 to call this number which is funny because the last time I got a call from this same number, it was to call a different 888 number for a similar but different matter. Total scam, this isn't how debt collection works. They are also calling my work number. Is there anything that can be done about the harassment?

I hate the [***] People!!!! They called from a 843-649-0003, then the recording leaves a call back number of 855-251-0542. Great, so that just solidify the scam. I know what and who I owe, and it's not no damn checks that have been written or loans unpaid. The next time they call me, I'm gonna tell them hold on let me get her on the line, and transfer to the call to the police department. I'm sick of scam artist. I
