    anonymously annoyed
I got a call regarding a delivery from a relative. His story was very jumbled. Clearly they are gathering target information of related individuals online and seeking out their prey. Do not provide them with anything whatsoever. When I told the caller, Angel Lopez, that this had all the hallmarks of identity theft and scam, he said that he was just doing his job to follow up. It's a 100% phishing for more information surely for financial gain. The number shows as blocked but he provided me the call back number of (855) 418-5105. #moron

I agree with Deb that this appears to be a voice phishing attempt. I received a voicemail from an Unknown number for my wife claiming legal action was going to take place. No organizational name was provided. Below is a transcript of the message they left:

“This is an urgent message intended for [SPOUSE'S NAME] my name is Vanessa Jimenez I'm calling in regards to a complaint that is just been received in my office if has any questions or concerns regarding the pending actions that are now going to be filed against her she will need to contact the legal department at 855-418-5105. The file number that she will need to reference when calling in is [6-DIGIT NUMBER]. Please be advised this is a time sensitive matter and it does require her immediate attention. It is extremely urgent they do speak with her or they will be forced to take action without her participation. Once again this is an urgent message intended for [SPOUSE'S NAME]…”

There is no way I will be calling them back.

All "Deb" said was that there were several calls and nothing about phishing.  Were you instead referring to the post by "anonymously annoyed"?  This is not a phishing attempt.  This is an extortion attempt.  There is no doubt that they have the correct person's address and phone number.  The "pending actions", "legal department", "case number", "extremely urgent", and "forced to take action with her participation" are dead giveaways.

One of the tricks they use is to call your family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.  They often call people that have never even been associated with you because they get erroneous information off of the internet.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

5/17/2018: I received calls today to my cell, other personal number, work number, my wife's cell and my stepson's cell (indicating I used him as a reference). I called back from my work number and actually had someone answer twice. Sounded something like 'Adolfin and Associates'. My wife thought that the message she received was something about National Processing Center.

My stepson is in New York City looking for apartments and applying with us as co-applicants. Any of the other commenters have possible NYC connections?

Hi Deb, is there a chance that your information came from a New York City connection? I'm tracking down what seems most likely, and with my stepson providing information to NYC real estate rental agents, it makes me suspicious. We live in Albuquerque.

I suspect that my phone calls from this number are the result of my stepson's apartment searches in New York City. Do you have any geographic suspicions regarding the origination of your calls?

I am located in California and have no connection to the New York area at all. So I'm not sure there is an NYC connection.

100% Spam caller. The number shows up as unknown and in their voicemail they don't tell you a company name. Instead they just give you their 800# and a specific case number to reference when you call back. In this thread, Mark sums up the same exact voicemail transcript that I received as well. My family member, who was the victim of this scam call, called back from a blocked number with a different identity and asked for the business name. The business name given was, "A. Dawson & Associates." They also want to extort you to the tune of $2k to drop the "legal action" so you can save yourself a trip to the courtroom and associated fees. I researched the business name and there are related companies with that type of name but not the exact one. I even went onto the Better Business Bureau's site and looked up the company and it does not exist. I have officially reported them to the Better Business Bureau for investigation. If you all haven't already, please do so to help support the case. https://www.bbb.org/scamtracker/us
