The fake process server/location specialist scam usually contains:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or that some sort of complaint has “come across my desk” and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work they need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and have to be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there is actually a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

my family member got a call and a voicemail left, asking me to call the number. I called the number and was told I was being rude and had an attitude when simply just asking questions on why I had this case number, and saying I was going to be served on this upcoming Monday and there is a lien on my home since 2017 and that it was from a loan from 14 years ago and the number they originally called was on the loan application as a references, which clearly couldn't because that number they called didn't exist 14 years ago. I called back not once but 2 more times to be clearly hung up on again. So we will see what happens on Monday.

Reading these comments gave me a sense of relief. I received a VMS message in an AI voice from this number, with similar intimidation threats that others have reported. I have no intention of calling the number back. Many thanks for the reports that people have left. I'm thinking it's about an unpaid medical bill. I'm old and have cancer; what are they going to do, put me in jail? 😆😁😅😂

Its 100% a scam. Do not give them any information. I also got a call from a local number then a case number and this 855 number. Looks like theyre doing the rounds with this number and will probably move on to another soon. Be careful out there! Let your older parents and other elders know about these types of scams, they can get nasty and demand money to make this 'go away' when there was nothing here to begin with.

That isn't them and it is irresponsible for you to post a link to that company without checking to see if it is the same company.

Call came in Friday August 23rd - 2024

Just got a voicemail from a "SPAM LIKELY" number. It said it was from Pennington and associates & to call back regarding a case number - The call back number was 855-665-1602. When I called back, there's no professional intro like the one you'll expect from a professional law firm. Just a guy that answers. The guy that answered asked if I was the person the voicemail was for, I said yes, then he wanted me to confirm my SSN and address, I told him, no, it can be a scam call, he got really pissed, and said: that's why you getting sue, because of your attitude... lol - He started getting really upset and said next week they'll see me in court. I asked him what was the name of his law firm, he got mad & started harassing me. Im in LA & there's no Pennington and associates law firm anywhere in LA.

Anyone that received the same call - DON"T WORRY - THEY'RE SPAM!

Interesting how you posted 2 minutes after Melanie C. there. My guess is from the timing of the posts in this thread that all the posts are being made by the same person simply to run up the post count.

You must be using a "google" that is not the google.com that most people use, because google.com does not return any links to any sites that tie this number to either a plumbing supplier or a private investigator.

Google will match parts of a phone number and return that match, even of the rest of the phone number is not present.  So, for example, in this case it will return links to website pages that contain any toll free number that have an 855 area code.  You cannot just look at the snippet that Google returns and assume that it actually matched what you entered, you need to take the effort to check it is right.

They called me yesterday from a 214 Texas number but said to call back this 855 665 1602. Called and talked to a guy who said he’s from Pennington and associates - said I wasn’t sure if this was legit or a scam, he replied ‘you wish this was a scam but in laymen’s terms, you’re being sued’…he said it’s for a loan from like 2010 or 2011, but the guy seemed unusually unprofessional. Thought it might be legit but everyone else has the same story so hoping it’s a scam
