    Annoyed
I received a call from Laura Lee today.   She said the company was called, "Judicial Services".  The phone number that appeared on my caller id was 281-915-3133.  The callback number provided was 855-703-2230.  She told me that I owed a debt from years back, but could not provide the date or much else.  She said that they would be serving me with a lawsuit within 24 hours, and I would have to appear before a judge.  I owe no such debt.  She was fishing for information.  I told her that this was a scam, and she accused me of being rude.

First off, the bank could press charges, but they can't file or take you to court.  No debt collector can either.  There would be no way for you to "PAY" your way out of those charges, since that would be considered a bribe and you would be in even more hot water.  This is a common ploy by criminals attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, etc. all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
