- ReginaReceived a call today 3/26/12, left this message...Awards Confirmation Center, we had entered a sweepstakes for a 2012 Ford Explorer (not that we remember), or $25,000.00 and we had won one of the 3 prizes...at no cost to us. Haven't called them back. We have U-Verse, number came up on the television as a 913 area code when call came in.

- NCReceived identical message as the above posting. The phone # on my caller ID was 931-683-2007
I did not return the call. - Michele| 2 repliesReceived a message on my answering machine today from Awards Confirmation Center, the caller's name was Thomas Nouns 1-855-809-7501 notifying me, by name, that I had won a Ford Explorer, $25,000 cash or 1 of 3 grand prizes from a contest I had entered (which I do not remember). It asked that the call be returned to above number. I did attempt to return the call but got the voice mail of Thomas Nouns. Just left my name and same telephone number he called yesterday and no more information. I did check the area code from the area code list and 855 is a toll free area code but possibly a proposed one in US that is not in use yet. Am I at any risk for having dialed this number? How can we identify as a scam?

A Dozen Ways to Protect Yourself
The next time you get a "personal" letter or telephone call telling you "it’s your lucky day," the Federal Trade Commission encourages you to remember that:
1. Legitimate sweepstakes don’t require you to pay or buy something to enter or improve your chances of winning, or to pay "taxes" or "shipping and handling charges" to get your prize.
If you have to pay to receive your "prize," it’s not a prize at all.

2.Another phone scam involves calls from “Prize Distribution Centers” that claim that you are the winner in sweepstakes or a lottery. Of course, you are not the only “winner” in the lottery and tens of thousands of people received the same call. The goal of the scheme is to entice you to make a relatively small payment (for example, shipping and handling fee, a sales tax) promising that a much bigger prize will be sent your way. Once the payment is sent, you will most likely not hear from the company again, and a promised “Lincoln Navigator” will not find its way to your driveway. - JanThey left a message for my son by name. Said his entry form from last summer had been chosen at random for one of three grand prizes worth $25,000.00. Left a toll-free number for him to call (this reported number 1-855-809-7501) and said his name was Thomas Nouns?(last name garbled). The number that showed up on the caller ID was (931) 683-2007. He didn't return the call as he NEVER fills out entry forms for anything. Plus the fact that the guy said it was from last summer seemed pretty unusual. Also, my son didn't live with me last summer and he had a different phone number. This is my number and he uses a cell phone number.
